Photoshop: Help needed

I'm trying to find out:
How do you color "under" the lines of a BW line drawing? Drawing in a layer covers the lines.
And while I'm at it: how do you alter the gradients so that the go "behind" the background layer?
Help, please!

I'm putting the finishing touches on a coloring tutorial here----

It would be easier posting it in the site gallery. There are 10 steps as I colored and a picture to go with each step -- 10 pictures in all. Hope this helps.
Here's the finished one by the way.

Guuhh...buhhh...

WOW!
HOLY CRAP!
Thanks RC!
You just made my day!
I guess I'll have to try that style on my next piece. I went ahead and finished the Monster X color pic, but I'll definately try your technique next!

Take deep breaths, relax, there -- better? :P
Hope this helps.
Well, I hoped it would be okay using one of your cool drawings for this, so you could get an idea what a Photoshop colored one would look like. That gallery I have at the site has a good bit of art already, and a tutorial would fit better there. Registered members can post art and comments, which for the most part has worked out pretty good.
If you want, you can use the gallery to post questions about a step in the coloring if you'd like.
