Although I won't be doing this as a fan-fiction piece, I might as well throw this idea out and see what you think.

Consider putting scenes of writing letters to the dead loved ones. Also with the commanders looking over the roster lists and seeing empty names as well as visiting the units and seeing way too many new faces all the time.

Return of the Darkness:

Story Pitch: At the end of the 20th century, a Cold War ended along with a secret unknown war. Many hoped that the world would enter into a new era of peace. However, the conflicts in the beginning of the new century have destroyed that hope. As a result, a great darkness that humanity believed that it stopped on the eve of the millennium has returned. A secret task force with members from both America and Japan has long been preparing for this day. Created during the secret unknown war, it remained in operation in a reduced capacity until the darkness would return to menace humanity more.

-Once the fighting commences, the task force has a difficult time uniting the world together and it is only when the situation nears the point of catastrophe in the target areas do the other nations commit and allow the task force to operate freely and commit to defeating the great darkness.

-In terms of combat performance, the task force is the one performing at its best while the rest of the world is slow on the uptake to deal with the threat.


Potential target locations:

The monster strikes at locations all around the Pacific Rim. Consider the idea of ghosts or Godzilla sensing instinctively that certain locations are central to what and how he came into being (aka the events that spawned him). The final battle with be at Tokyo.

-Target location: Aleutians, west coast then Hawaii, then China, Taiwan, Okinawa and then finally Tokyo.

- Alternate target location: Aleutians, Kuril Islands, Northern Japan, Russia, Korea, parts of China, eastern Japan, Tokyo.

-Cells from Godzilla eventually peel off somewhere in one of the monster’s travels and it eventually must have sensed nuclear material nearby. Once they find nuclear energy, they are virtually indestructible and remain so for a very long time. The cells also provide a role as they form the key element of Godzilla’s invincibility. Attack that and the chances to survive and eventually score decisive victories against the monster increase (of course that does not mean the fights against Godzilla will be difficult, in fact they still are). However, they must be destroyed to the last molecule (after Godzilla is taken down) or else they will spawn a new Godzilla.

-Goal for victory: Send the monster back to from which it came.


Potential target location: Aleutians, west coast then Hawaii, then China, Taiwan, Okinawa and then finally Tokyo

Act I
It has been many years since the fight against the great darkness ended with humanity stepping back from the edge of annihilation. Since then, the history of the Godzilla war has truly vanished into the mists of history while other equally traumatic events occur in the world. However, all of that paled with the discovery that the legendary king of the monsters is very much alive although in hibernation in the Arctic.
After a series of ship disasters in the Arctic Ocean, a secret American/Japanese task force decides to call up its lead commander, who was living in seclusion in Tokyo. Once given the information, he assumes command of the task force and attempts to train the task force with the help of his command staff (which included old comrades who he had served with and vets who had fought in the last war against Godzilla).
Unfortunately, they run out of time when the UN sends an ill-advised expedition with a nuclear submarine to finally find out once and for all the cause of the sinking’s. It encounters Godzilla who immediately sinks it while absorbing its core before heading southwest.
With Godzilla now free and heading their way, the task force puts its defensive plan to effect. All US and Japanese forces are on war footing and recall personnel from other areas of the world as this threat supersedes them all.
The first engagements begin near the Aleutian Islands as units of the US air force along with available Japanese air assets prepare to engage the monster as he marches south. Once he heads towards the military bases in the area, the air units scramble to do as much damage as possible while the personnel attempted to evacuate by either departing the islands or heading into the terrain. Although the battles are quick and brutal, the nuclear saurian does minimal damage though a good number of lives are lost. After breaking through, the monster disappears into the Pacific.
To the surprise of all, the monster heads southeast at first at rapid speed while demolishing ships that crossed his line of fire. Eventually the fears of the US contingents come true as the monster heads towards the West Coast. Just barely just in time do the US military managed to respond to the threat with a combined air defense as well as US ground forces taking up most of the slack. After demolishing the west coast, Godzilla heads east with the first stop in Hawaii. Despite a valiant defense, Hawaii, and particularly the island of Oahu suffers heavy damage.

West coast:
Caught out of position, the task force, particularly its US elements, rush to catch up to Godzilla as he heads towards the west coast as a large part of the US Pacific Fleet headed west towards Asia with the result of them being in the wrong location. As they rush back towards home, the forces remaining in the US mobilize to defend home against the nuclear saurian.
The naval forces gather to block his advance while airstrikes attempt to slow him down. Although they fight well, the assembled forces are overwhelmed and Godzilla breaks through. Knowing what would happen, the US naval and air forces engage in a running firefight while marking locations where Godzilla would land.
Godzilla eventually makes landfall on the northwestern coast and engages US forces that rush to meet him. After annihilating the forces in front of him as well as the surrounding area, Godzilla marches south, marching straight through roadblocks as well as destroying population centers nearby as well as absorbing nuclear power plants along his advance. After wrecking a large swath of the west coast, Godzilla returns to the Pacific Ocean, heading west.

Hawaii:
Regrouping after the carnage on the west coast, the task force soon discovers Godzilla heading on a westward path with the Hawaiian Islands as the next probable target. Nearly all US forces in the Pacific prepare to meet him along with whatever assets Japan could spare.
The combatants clash east of Hawaii and it develops into a brutal battle. Fortunately the US naval and air forces gathered in strength and perform well. Eventually though the monster breaks through their lines and they regrouped as they fight to divert hopefully the monster’s advance. Although they are unable to block Godzilla’s advance, they buy time for those on Hawaii to prepare for the coming storm. During the battles, several nuclear subs fall to the monster who quickly absorbed their nuclear reactors.
The nuclear saurian’s first target is the main island before he marches on the others, devastating the targets in his advance. The air units continue their assaults to try to protect civilians from the monster. After trashing the islands, particularly Hawaii Island and Oahu, Godzilla departs from the area. Fortunately, casualties were not as bad on both the west coast and Hawaii although the west coast casualties were considerable.

Act II:
With the experience of the battles on the US west coast and in Hawaii behind them, the US and Japan attempted to mobilize a response to the threat. However, they encounter difficulties due to the disbelief of the other nations and their reactions to the behavior of the Americans and Japanese in the lead-up to Godzilla’s return. The experts who had prepared long and hard for the monster now had to share command with those that lack experience and who had their own goals.
The fleets of the special task force search the oceans of the Pacific Godzilla. Thanks to satellites as well as tracking the attacks on ships by Godzilla, they barely manage to find him. Air attacks by the Americans and Japanese to delay Godzilla’s advance once they find him before he hits his next target.
On the political side, the special task force is getting little help from the other nations of the Pacific and they are mostly responsible, sometimes unwillingly to the burden of the defense while the rest deal with mainly with the evacuation of their citizens. It is not until Godzilla hits Hong Kong, that the Chinese government actively participates in the fight along with reluctantly allowing the special task force to participate.
After the battering of Hong Kong, Godzilla returns to the ocean and begins heading northeast. He soon approaches the Taiwan Straits where the human forces plan a naval stand. It results in a brutal naval battle that devastates the combined human forces while also exposing Taiwan’s western coast to Godzilla’s wrath. Finished with the area, Godzilla heads northeast again to the old battlefields of Tokyo.
Confronted with the full scale of the destruction in their own territories, the other nations in the Pacific commit their forces to assist the special task force. Furthermore, in investigating the devastated areas, the task force gathers samples of cells from Godzilla’s body with the information gleamed from them to prepare plans to face the monster head on and to take away as much of his advantages as possible. It comes none too soon as they sight Godzilla heading straight for Japan.

Hong Kong
The battle begins with the sighting of Godzilla between the Philippines and Taiwan and heading west towards the Chinese mainland. The Chinese military units assemble to engage him while the US and Japanese forces attempt to rush to their aid but are prevented from doing so. They watch helplessly as Godzilla breaks through the Chinese fleet and it is only when the monster makes the final approach to the city that the Chinese allow the task force to engage Godzilla.
Godzilla enters into Hong Kong harbor and begins to engage with the Chinese ground forces and the few ground elements of the task force that arrived in time. Air units from all around the region rush into engage Godzilla as he waded into the harbor. In turn, the monster devastated the numerous ships and civilian installations on the coast. Wading ashore, the combatants engage each other in urban terrain that rivals that of the Japanese cities. Though fighting with exceptional honor, the task force ground elements are too few to challenge Godzilla effectively. Attacking viciously, they bear most of the fire from Godzilla and divert him away from the Chinese army and the civilians, often at the price of their own lives. Marching through the city, Godzilla uses his destructive power as well as knocking down some of the largest skyscrapers in the world onto his victims. In the aftermath of the battle, they receive a large amount of the blame.

Taiwan Strait:
After departing Hong Kong, Godzilla heads northeast to which satellites and other reconnaissance assets track his movements. Through this information, the military forces in the region find that Godzilla is heading towards the Taiwan Strait. Though the organization of the defense would regularly pose a problem due to the complex relations between Taiwan and China, both countries manage to unite their forces together.
The combined forces engage Godzilla in the middle of the strait with combined air and naval attacks as well as missile launches from islands in the strait. Starting in small groups, the naval units would eventually get their shot at the monster.
Despite fighting bravely, the combined forces are overwhelmed and worse was to come as Godzilla decided to add to the carnage in the strait by heading to the west coast of Taiwan. After inflicting heavy damage to targets on the western Taiwan coast, Godzilla heads back into the ocean, once again heading northeast and the whole world, particularly the Japanese wondering when the blow would inevitably fall upon them.

Act III: Raids on southern Japan and Tokyo.
What the Japanese dread has happened as Godzilla returns to the old battlegrounds where he has battled humanity many times before. The monster attacks targets in Kyushu, Shikoku, and Honshu. This triggers brutal battles with the full strength of the task force as well as the forces of what the other nations were willing to send, which is pitiful. The main battles consist of the task force attempting to slow Godzilla down while shutting down any nuclear power plants that are in his path. Despite their best efforts, the task force is unable to prevent Godzilla from absorbing several more nuclear power plants and becoming infinitely stronger. The only redeeming feature is the fact that they manage to prevent the casualties from spiraling skyward as what happened in the battles overseas.
However, that is a warm up for the main battle, which occurs when Godzilla approaches Tokyo from the seaside. At the entrance to Uraga Strait, the task force confronts the monster in a brutal fight that takes him into Tokyo Harbor. Once he breaks through the ground forces fall back to defend the city and the surrounding areas. The focus is on the escape arteries as well as the Imperial Palace.
The ground units use shoot and scoot tactics to defend themselves against the nuclear saurian. The most effective of these units were the maser tanks with some joining the tanks in the shoot and scoot while the rest conducting luring operations. The air units resort mainly to helicopters and selected air strikes due to the urban terrain.
The fight spans from the coastal districts to the skyscrapers of Shinjuku. Amongst the huge towers of Tokyo, the task force used every means at its disposal, which included special weapons that they had created after studying the cells from the monster.

-Lure him out of the city or force him out and inflict a decisive defeat. The protagonists realize that the new conflict against the kaiju is only just beginning.


Comic issues: 6

Issue 1: Initial background with character introductions and the revelation that Godzilla is alive and the attacks begin with Alaska being the first target.
Issue 2: Godzilla marches on the west coast before turning to Hawaii. A major sea engagement occurs with mainly US military assets along with Japanese air assets. Negotiations between the nations and beginning of Hong Kong

Despite the response by the American and Japanese forces, the Russian forces respond to the presence of Godzilla by engaging him in battle. However, the Russians would fare worse than their elite counterparts would as they suffer crippling losses and their installations fall to the monster’s advance. It would only be due to the assistance of the air units of the special task force that the losses did not spiral higher.
After finishing with the northern Russian bases, Godzilla heads south towards his old stomping grounds in Japan. The combined elements of the task force engage him in several bruising battles in which they distinguish themselves despite suffering losses. Eventually Godzilla smashes his way through Hokkaido while recharging from a nuclear power plant along his line of advances before, to the shock of all, heading back to sea heading west.
To the surprise of the task force, Godzilla heads west towards the Asian mainland. Approaching the main Russian base of Vladivostok, Godzilla battles the Russian military while the Americans and Japanese engage him from the rear. Despite their best efforts, Godzilla fights his way through and demolishes the city with a particular focus on the naval yards due to the submarines there. With his strength increased and seeing no other foes in the present area, Godzilla departs back to the ocean as he searches for more nuclear energy, a process that takes him to Korea.


Act II:
Making his far ashore in the northeastern part of the Korean peninsula, Godzilla makes his way southwest. The Koreans and their allies in Russia and China attempt to mount a defense and the task force has to sit on the sidelines until they and the South Koreans, allow American and Japanese forces onto the lands. However, it would nearly be too late as Godzilla arrived at uranium deposits that strengthen him further. Eventually the monster breaks through heavy resistance to absorb the nuclear energy from the two nuclear power plants in North Korea before demolishing everything in his path as he returns to the ocean, which includes both capitals on the Korean peninsula. Both suffer heavy casualties.
While dealing with the disasters and the anger from the other nations, the task force regroups as they spot Godzilla in the Yellow Sea, naval forces assemble to keep him pinned in the ocean. At first it seems that Godzilla is heading for mainland Asia but instead he is spotted heading southeast with the 100 percent certainty of heading towards his old stomping grounds. The naval forces barely manage to assemble to oppose his advance and as a result, the monster breaks through their lines.
As the special task force reels form the latest battering at the hands of the monster, it attempts to recover its strength. Furthermore, in investigating the devastated areas, the task force gathers samples of cells from Godzilla’s body with the information gleamed from them to prepare plans to face the monster head on and to take away as much of his advantages as possible. Issue 2: Russian forces engage and barely hold their ground with the assistance of the special task force. The monster then lands on the Japanese mainland and engages the task force in several brutal battles while absorbing nuclear energy and becoming stronger.
Issue 3: The monster departs Hokkaido and lands in Korea. Demolishing both North Korea and South Korea and it ends with Seoul in the firing line.
Issue 4: Godzilla battles the Koreans and the task force in the heart of Seoul . Afterwards he heads out into the ocean and the naval units assemble to block his path once they see him heading for Japan. They barely manage to assemble and engage in a running fight before Godzilla breaks through and lands on Japanese shores.
Issue 5: Godzilla rampages through the area with the task force mounting attempts to slow him down as populations evacuate and attempts to shut down nuclear power plants in the vicinity. Godzilla returns to the ocean before resurfacing and heading straight for his primary target, the city of Tokyo. The air force and naval units engage him at the entrance to Tokyo Bay. However, the monster breaks through and engages the ground forces at the shore.
Issue 6: After a vicious all-out fight, the task force triumphs and defeats Godzilla. However, they tragically realize that it may only be the beginning and the resumption of the war that they had thought finished last century.

Act I

It has been many years since the fight against the great darkness ended with humanity stepping back from the edge of annihilation. Since then, the history of the Godzilla war has truly vanished into the mists of history while other equally traumatic events occur in the world, which eventually lead to a “world civil warâ€

These are the notes from the prequel story to Godzilla: Return of the Darkness called Cloaked Darkness.


Operation Arctic Watch:

1. Fighting in enclosed spaces and also in harsh weather, in this case cold weather.

2. Test of threats against enormous air and submarine threats for long periods of time.


Godzilla: Cloaked Darkness

Act I
Due to the chaotic situation of the world now, the United States and its allies hold large exercises. One particular one is in the Bering Sea and it is between the United States and Japan. Once they reach the area, the exercises get underway and they deal with search operations and anti-submarine operations. However, certain incidents start to occur and it eventually worries both fleets. Accusations start to fly and it almost nearly comes to blows.
At the same time though, satellite imagery starts to detect a large heat bloom but due to bureaucratic and communications problems, it does not reach its intended recipients for some time.


In the near future, the world is sliding on the knife’s edge into chaos. The Eurasian landmass has had multiple conflicts that have risen to the level of World Wars. Although America has recently made true honest attempts to gain back its moral high ground, her military and that of her allies had a hard time keeping things calm as they themselves have done ugly things still.
When a new wave of intelligence reports arrives into the hands of the president of the United States, he and the military commanders arrange military exercises with their allies. Among the exercises would be one in the Bering Sea between the Americans and Japanese. Both the US Navy and the JMSDF begin to prepare and soon their respective forces arrive in the region.
At the same time, reconnaissance satellites pour through the area to ensure that there would be no problems. However when they looked over the Bering Sea, the satellites picked up an odd anomaly as their photographs showed that there was a powerful heat bloom in the area. While it was a worrying development, the satellite technicians did not felt it was a worrying development, as it did not match any threat that they knew to look for from their foes.
Both naval forces arrive and soon the exercises get under way. They consisted of engagements dealing with submarines as well as engagements between powerful surface groups. While the surface engagement exercises go well as can be expected, the submarine exercises start to turn sour as a mysterious force begins to hunt down the American Los Angeles class submarines. Horrified by the sudden assaults, the surviving Japanese and American submarines could only make their way back to the main fleet with no evidence of what had happened.
Rumors start to fly about the cause of the loss of the submarines and they eventually lead to the feet of the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force. Only through hard negotiation by the lead commanders had ensured that problems would not proceed any further. Both fleets separate from each other and maintain distance while their commanders consult their governments.
Back in Japan, satellite technicians examine the photos from the region when they suddenly find a link that they wished that they never really did.


Act II
To smooth things over, the command staffs of both fleets hold a conference to deal with the problem. However, in the midst of the meeting, the Japanese commanders receive the photographs. At first, they keep their consul on the matter while they dispatch their own submarines to verify the information.
Soon Tokyo and Washing receive independent word of the possibility that the monster known as Godzilla has returned. After short and decisive deliberation on the matter, both leaders commit their forces to engage the creature. With air reinforcements flying in, the combined fleet heads north and soon confirms that Godzilla is very much alive.
The combatants engage and Godzilla immediately throws the fleet onto the defensive as he blasts his way forward. Eventually, they manage to drive him back north and extricate themselves to the south. Despite that, the performance of the combined force worries its commanders and it gets them to do some hard thinking.

As both Japan and the United States attempted to solve the problems that had developed in the Arctic Ocean, the data from the satellite teams reaches the Japanese government. Stunned at what it meant, the Japanese (many if not all who remember very well) do present the proof although they do not tell who is exactly responsible. They do not need to as the US intelligence agencies soon discover for themselves to culprit responsible. Stunned as well, both immediately agree to send their fleets north as well as reinforcements into the region.

In the Arctic, the American and Japanese fleet commanders hold a meeting on the John C. Stennis in order to get to the bottom of the disturbance. At first, it gets heated but eventually calms down for plans to be made although the Japanese will not reveal why at the present time.

That depends on a meeting in Tokyo where the participants are also tense. There after opening up the meeting for all, the defense chiefs reveal to the horror of everyone in the room that the greatest nemesis that Japan has ever known has returned. At first, all wonder out loud how they are going to reveal the information to their allies before they put an edited version to present together to the Americans via their ambassador.

In Washington, a similar meeting occurs and when the chief of the CIA reveals what he has found, it has the same result among its intended ears. Fight or provide logistical support at first before CIA breaks the news. However, after learning just what they are up against, the participants in the room all agree that they will join with their allies in combating the legendary monster.

-Comment by the president when he hears form the CIA chief that he heard all the rumors and to find out that it is true.

The news that they are to go to a war footing surprises the fleet commanders particularly the Americans. In the case of the Japanese, it frightens them. Getting to work, the combined fleet undergoes hasty retraining and re-fitting of weapons as reinforcements arrive at nearby bases. Rumors and speculation start to fly as the news comes in to prepare for combat.

-On that part, the re-supply includes a mix of re-fitting the anti-air missiles to fire at surface targets and stocking up with weapons designed to hit surface targets.

Soon the combined fleet is heading north with its main warships in the lead and the carriers and subs following behind them. The formation resembles at times an arrow formation. All of them have their sonar switched to active pinging with aircraft operating all around the formation.

A short time later, the sonar systems on the lead ships picked up the presence of the large target heading straight for them. The Americans want to verify what it is but the Japanese commanders knowing exactly what they are facing request battle stations. As this gets underway, the commanders argue for several minutes but when the target reveals itself, all arguments cease as the fleet opens fire on Godzilla. The ships engage first for several moments before the aircraft (lead by aircraft from the carriers) head in to engage although they immediately get a close up brush with friendly fire.

Godzilla quickly reaches their lines and a close-quarter brawl develops as the ships attempt to avoid being bludgeoned to death as well as his main weapon, his atomic breath.

Both the Japanese and American political leaders observe the action by satellite with both having horrific shocks at what they are facing.

Both the Japanese and the US military attempt last minute training and they dust off old but still very advanced weapons as well as integrate reinforcements. The preparation is too short as they spot the target heading straight at them. Soon everyone gets a good idea of the opposition, as the culprit is none other than Godzilla himself.
Not hesitating for a second, the combined fleet engages Godzilla who quickly returns the favor by unleashing his destructive power for all to see. Already suffering damage, the fleet commanders improvise in order to stay alive against the king of the monsters. As a continual stream of aircraft fly in to the battle zone in penny packets, the ships and subs regroup to try to push Godzilla back but it is to no avail and just adds to the quickly increasing butcher’s bill. Eventually with a massed volley fire tactic against Godzilla from all directions, the ships disengage and head south towards relative safety. In turn, Godzilla has enough for now and heads back north.
Having seen via satellite what they faced, the commanders in chiefs of the respective military forces quickly agree on the goal of the mission and they all start to get to some hard thinking since they all knew what would happen if Godzilla decides to truly re-emerge for all of the world to see.


Act III:
After long deliberation and using air and missile cover to repeatedly block Godzilla’s advance, the combined force launches an all out assault on Godzilla. Despite their best efforts, Godzilla blasts his way through and nearly reaches the open ocean before they manage to temporarily drive him back. They finally manage to lure him near the large icebergs in the area and they start to bury him by directing all of their firepower onto the icebergs.
The fleets make their way back to their respective homelands and while the Japanese personnel manage to get by fine with the population, the Americans have a bitter homecoming particularly at the hands of a very powerful US senator who has gotten wind of what had truly happened. He and his allies subject the American commanders to such a pounding in the courts and committees to the point where they resign from the service in complete disgrace. Fortunately, though both the American and Japanese governments begin to prepare for the fight ahead against the monster and they have a time limit of three years.

Working almost non-stop on trying to figure out a plan while drawing in as many reinforcements they can afford to get their hands on the combined military force prepares to confront Godzilla once more. It is none too soon as the monster has begun to head south once again and this time it seems nothing can stop him.
Relying on continuous air support, the combined fleet tries to stop Godzilla's advance and if possible push him back. They manage to do this but at a heavy price particularly in aircraft. The battle seesawed back and forth and it seemed that eventually Godzilla would triumph. Only by concentrating their fire and attacking him from behind as he headed south, could the combined fleet pull him back from the Pacific Ocean. However, all of them knew that they could not hold on like this forever and that they had to defeat him now.
Eventually the fighting managed to move north into the very midst of the large icebergs that dominated the area. Seeing no other choice, the military forces launch an all out do or die attempt that eventually lures Godzilla into a trap and then they focus their remaining firepower onto the icebergs around the monster. Though Godzilla continued to put up exceptionally heavy resistance, the resulting avalanche managed to bury him completely in the ice.
Stunned at the carnage they endured, the two fleets take stock of the losses before they send in the reports to their respective governments. Once they do the Prime Minister of Japan and the President of the United States of America attempt to figure out their options while ensuring with literally every asset at their disposal that nothing of what truly happened should leak out. While the security on the Japan side is safe, since those that heard the full story immediately understood its implications and the need to prepare for the horror, it is a much different story in America. Many in Congress put the American fleet commanders on trial for their despicable and intolerable behavior. Although the commanders (with assistance from the government) defend themselves as best they can, the senators rip into them so much until a large portion, partiuclarly bombarding them with the fact that the deaths that had occured were on their hands (many with some of the finest records in the service) of them are forced to resign in disgrace as they are charged with the damming insult of all in the service "dereliction of duty". The news soon comes close to sparking off an incident similar to the infamous "Revolt of the Admirals". The results horrify the US president although he and his allies soon put a stop to the Congress when they moved against them, and resume preparations including an important "off the record" meeting to organize a defense against the great darkness that everyone knew would come again very soon. One of the things that they do is find a new lead commander and eventually a name comes up that both governments soon keep a track of.


The two fleet commanders along with the commander of the Pacific Fleet and government officials are called in to explain themselves to the audience why they had an enormous butcher's bill.

-Shortly after the aftermath of Operation Arctic Watch, military and government representatives of America and Japan gather to begin planning for the oncoming threat. This proceeds in two stages: first talking directly about the threat and dealing with the lead-up (mainly dealing with the other countries since they're going to need the help). Furthermore, although with only limited access to records, the Japanese knew that part of the difficulties in facing Godzilla last time came from the limited help they had.

-Comment on the Senator and wondering why about why is he doing this. When senator hears about it he is in shock as he realizes what this may mean. Takes different measures to persuade the president that it is not their fight and if so, must use immediate extreme measures.

-The first phase of the meeting: discusses what forces can be involved on both countries development of new technology and a command structure.

-The second deals with the issue of the other countries since both America and Japan know that they are going to need help and perhaps they could keep control of events. Some argue that when things do blow up in their faces, they should aim for a knockout punch. Others disagree as they feel that it will leave bad blood and make the job that much more difficult.


Shortly after this, the fears of a new war have come to pass as the actions of America as well as other circumstances help take the world the final step to a new world war. When America and Japan receive word, there is shock, silence and depression. They realize that history may well truly damm them.

Task Force: Created in late 1991, disbanded early 1996. While it mostly consisted of Japanese, several foreign volunteers are also part of the task force.

The Arctic Incident: Operation Arctic Watch
World civil war:

Starting point: Actions by America to prevent war actually result in it happening as it is a mix of being the last straw and the thing that broke the camel's back. It spreads like a virus to others and leaps through other countries. Firefights and brushfire rage in different locations and soon a situation resembling a hydra emerges.

Combatants: US, Japan, and convenient allies against a mix of conventional (mainly in Russia, China, and North Korea) and guerilla fighting (Middle East and South America).
Regions: Multiple regions around the globe with a mix of conventional and guerilla fighting.

If we cannot win it here, nay, have the stomach to stand our ground in a long war against a human enemy then how are we going to stand against the great darkness when it emerges from its prison.


The new Godzilla war begins

Goal: To defend the world against the threat of Godzilla

James Larsen: Task Force Supreme Commander.
Like most of his colleagues, he entered the service in the early 1980s. In the later half of the 1980s, he applied to being a pilot and earned his wings. He participated in the Gulf War and in the Balkans before serving in a stint at the naval academy. Around the same time, he had also begun research on long forgotten and at the time obscure wars as well as Asian affairs. Among one of his mentors at the academy is a future veteran of the Arctic Incident and a carrier admiral himself. Making his way gradually up the ranks, he would eventually assume command of the USS Enterprise just prior to the World Civil War. Two of his interesting battle experiences on the battlefield occurred in the area around North Korea as well as Vladivostok and in the sieges in the Baltic Sea where he would also at times go ashore as well. While in Japan, he forged good relations with the Japanese officers that he worked with. Though being part of different flagships, the one he served on the most was USS Enterprise. Once the war ended, he took leave of the service and reports last placed him to be in Japan.

-While a part of me would prefer to keep the main character the way he is, consider to make a change and turn this into a Japanese main leader of the task force. As a result, he would be an air force commander.

Akira Tanagawa: Task Force Supreme Commander
A Japanese air force general and the supreme commander of the task force created to battle Godzilla. Served in the previous war as commander of an elite fighter wing in brutal battles against the kaiju and worked well with members from other nations. Afterwards, he took part in a leadership capacity during a Japan Defense Agency study of the war against Godzilla in the aftermath of its nearly tragic end. When the job was finished, he kept his own copies of the notes used to put the report together before higher ups discarded it. He later traveled abroad as part of his duties as well as other matters. Those travels have taken up long periods and have taken Tanagawa to different parts of the globe. As he had taken command of the forces in the south, Tanagawa did not directly participate in Arctic Watch though elements of his command had headed northward as part of the reinforcements. Although he suspected as much, he did not find out the complete truth until several years later. In the World Civil War, he fought both in the northern and southern Asian sectors and particularly went through hard fighting in the northern sector. After the war and despite the rumors, he retired from JASDF and currently resides in Tokyo.

Yamata: Commander and liaison of all naval elements of the task force. Served in Korea, Indian Ocean, and Somalia. He participated in Operation Arctic Watch as captain of the flagship of First Escort Force, JMSDFS Huyga. He worked directly with Tanagawa several times during the World Civil War.

Richardson: Commander and liaison of all air-force elements of the task force. He is also one of the Americans who fought in the last war, his role being that of a commander of another elite fighter wing. From time to time during that war, he worked alongside Tanagawa. Afterwards, Richardson’s career took the normal route with service during the wars in the Middle East.

Tazaki: Commander and liaison of all ground force elements of the task force as well as that of the Eastern armies

Harmon: Co-Commander of Eastern armies. American who fought in the last war. Later did his time in both Afghanistan and Iraq (half and half in both battle zones).

Shiratori: Commander of Northeastern armies

Riley: Co-Commander of Northeastern armies. Later did his time mostly in Afghanistan though he had also served in Iraq.

Tanaka: Commander of Northern armies.

Cox: Co-Commander of Northern armies. While he did some time in Afghanistan, Cox served mostly in Iraq.

Maxwell: Commander of the USS Enterprise and part of the fleet unit in charge of defending Tokyo

Shindo: Commander of the combined fleet units responsible for the defense of Tokyo and commander of the JDS Ise. He fought in the Indian Ocean and Somalia.

Williams: Commander of the USS George Washington and though stationed in Yokosuka, he is part of the fleet in charge of defending Hokkaido. Entering the service in the late 1970s, Williams would earn his wings in the mid 1980s and he would first see action in the Gulf during the war between Iran and Iraq. Later, he would command a squadron in the first Gulf War and then an air wing from 1999 to the end of 2001. Williams would then serve in a stint at the US Naval Academy before transferring to Asia. Later he would assume command of a carrier and be promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral. He would participate in the Arctic incident and came close to losing his command. Williams would remain in the Pacific during the World Civil War and besides a stint in the Middle East; he would serve in the different areas of Asia.

Shimada: Commander of the combined fleet units responsible for the defense of Hokkaido from the JDS Huyga though stationed in Yokosuka. He spent a small amount of time in Korea and most of his battle experience against other human foes was in Somalia.

Miki Odaka: Commander and special liaison to the task force
Though somewhat younger than her commanding officers, she has had the most experience in warfare. Gifted (or perhaps cursed) with a specialized ability, she became involved in the war against Godzilla while still a teen. She had seen and done things that most people have done in their thirties and forties. In the aftermath, she dropped off the grid although rumors have gone around of her living in America.

Yoshida: A well-known Japanese scientist, Yoshida has dealt with the issues of nuclear and chemical weapons and their harmful power. When she was younger, Yoshida participated in dealing with the infamous subway attacks of 1995. Afterwards, she participated in UN inspection teams in the former Soviet Union and in Iraq. After leaving Iraq, she returned to Japan, continued her studies, and now has worked with several prestigious organizations on issues dealing with cancer and diseases.

Katherine Blanchard: Former naval pilot, reporter and special liaison to the task force. Entering the mid 1980s, Katherine had a somewhat hard fight up the ranks due to the times but she got her chance to participate in combat during the Gulf War. Afterwards she would participate in several of the other conflicts at the time with some of them alongside James Larsen. While proving herself a capable pilot, Katherine would not get the chance to have command and eventually came close to resigning from the service. However, the World Civil War changed that and she commanded a naval air wing. Though she did have at times a cynical side, she managed to get along very well with most people and had a knack for negotiation and dealing with the most bull-headed of people. In addition, Blanchard had a knack for helping out in drawing up operational plans and sorting through seemingly obscure information and making sense of it to her colleagues.

Gondo: Former naval officer, defense consultant and special liaison to the task force
Served in the JMSDF though with a large portion in staff positions and did participate in direct combat against Godzilla in its later stages. In the aftermath, she participated in a research group that dealt with the conflict against the kaiju as part of the Japan Defense Agency. During that time, she worked with Akira Tanagawa and forged a good working friendship with him. Afterwards, she participated in operations off Somalia before the World Civil War. During the conflict, she also participated in the expeditionary operations. After the conflict ended, she retired and became a defense consultant and studied in foreign affairs. She can be somewhat of a cynic at times.

Note for the Japanese characters: Although they had witnessed the first Godzilla war, none had a ringside seat as Miki Odaka. In addition, the commanders had all fought in the fighting’s later stages.

My main characters are all commanders and they are the main leaders in defending the world against Godzilla. They know that it is the most difficult task that they have ever faced in their careers and their lives. Many (particularly the Japanese) are veterans of the last war and the others have read up about it and want to help, perhaps feeling that they need to serve something better after the experience they have gone through in recent years. They also try to rally the world to deal with the threat but it has been shortly after another horrific world war and the scars have not healed completely amongst the combatants. The commanders though are willing to work with everyone. Some of the other nations want to use extreme measures for different reasons, which include revenge amongst the lead countries as well as being the victor against Godzilla. As for the Americans themselves a good portion see this as a chance for redemption.


PS new change: some of the Americans had witnessed the war as well and all of the Japanese served in the first war as well with most (if not all) seeing it in its later stages and being lucky to tell about it.

Chapter 1: A dark cold ocean of death

Arctic Ocean
Even with the fact that humanity explored the region for a long time the Arctic remained a mysterious region to the world. Few humans lived amongst the enormous glaciers that dominated the area despite the punishment that they suffered at the hands of human progress. While at times, one could see traces of the animals that inhabited the Arctic, they were very few in number and they mostly remained hidden amongst the glaciers or in the dark grey depths of the ocean. High above the ocean, the sky remained eternally black despite the fact that it was already a few hours after dawn.
Amongst the huge formations of glaciers that dominated the region, lay one exceptionally large one. Though ostensibly the same as the others floating around and alongside it, a particular anomaly made it stand out from all of the rest. From time to time, it gave off a bright glow despite the fact that nothing should be able to live deep within the thick ice. Sometimes the glow was strong enough that if any human eyes were present, they could see the thick ice beginning to melt in several places. However due to a freak of nature or a miracle of some sort, the iceberg remained mostly intact.
While most of the icebergs served at times to contained artifacts from long ago of man and beast and if it were not for the glow that this particular iceberg gave off, it would have been the same thing. However, it was not the case as the object that lay within the thick sheet of ice was that of a living creature. Alongside the glow of energy that emanated from the dark-charcoal grey skin of the creature, its eyes opened from time to time as it searched for foes to kill and food to feast upon.
Long before the time of man, other such magnificent creatures roamed the earth often killing each other for the need to survive. Even long after the death of their brethren and the dominance of man over the Earth a few still lived and waged war amongst themselves and against the new dominant species. After many years of combat, it seemed that humanity and destroyed the last of these horrific creatures that should have long ago joined their fellow beings in death. Almost instantaneously, they moved to forget such horrors and move on with their collective lives whether it included making peace or waging war. Unfortunately, the darkness that the human spirit contained within itself was they key that unleashed such creatures on the modern world, and it would do so again.

As he looked over the latest dispatches from Vladivostok, Captain Nikokai Dubanov rubbed his eyes from the exhaustion he felt. The captain knew that he needed to rest but training, restlessness, and the nature of the mission prevented him from doing so. Taking a sip from the glass cup of tea on the table, the captain took a moment to review the general information about the region in his head before he turned back to read the orders he received from his superiors just before the sub left Vladivostok Harbor.
After reading the last part of the message, Dubanov shivered though he understood the order. He remembered that already several other subs had met a grim fate in this particular area. Seeing that there was nothing else for him to mull over, he captain put all of the notes back into the safe and headed to his bunk, determined to get as much rest as possible.
Only thirty minutes later, the sub’s intercom rudely woke him up. Grumbling at whoever attempted to disturb him despite the nature of the job he soon got on the line and asked, “What is it?â€

Chapter 2: A meeting

Tokyo, Japan
A large number of people around the world consider Tokyo to be one of the grandest cities on the Earth. Its many wards or sections combined an excellent of Japan's past, its present and its potential future. Whether by day or night the city never seemed to sleep and the streets of its most well known sections flowed with vehicles and people either trying to get home or else heading out for a night out on the town. This city had also seen much history with some of it resulting with Tokyo nearly vanishing from the face of the Earth and yet somewhat it rose out of the ashes to become just as grand as it was if not even more so than before.
Although the streets of Shinjuku were crowded at this time, it did not prove difficult as a car drove down the streets and through the maze of enormous skyscrapers. Inside of it, its driver turned to look at his digital watch before he turned back to look at the road and within minutes, he found his destination. After showing the guard his ID, he headed into the subterranean parking structure and soon found a spot. Once inside the building, he immediately headed towards the elevators and soon found the room he was looking for.
Inside he found several large shelves of books with most of them dealing about history and a few dealing about science as well as a small television and other amenities that one would find in a house. One thing that did caught his eye were a particular set of photos of military officers, all of them high-ranking ones. Soon enough he found who he was looking for, a dark-brown haired man who was sitting at his desk and seemingly in deep concentration as he as looking over some notes. Pausing for a moment to observe him silently, the visitor then made his presence felt as he said to him, “Excuse me are you James Larsen?â€

Chapter 3: Training and gathering

Yokosuka Harbor, Yokosuka, Japan
Considered one of the largest naval ports, Yokosuka served three main customers: the US 7th fleet, the JMSDF and the civilian shipping. Not surprisingly, any visitors to the port and city would see scores of ships in the harbor at any given time as well as a large number of military personnel, especially that from the US Navy.
However, the recent influx of US warships in the past few days surprised and at times worried the residents of the city. Especially worrying was the presence of scores of nuclear submarines and the presence of one other carrier. Not only did the Japanese have concerns about nuclear energy used on warships, the sight of so many warships worried them about the possibility that another war was on its way.
The sailors, particularly those on the recent arrivals also shared the same concern as some of them had served in the Pacific and this was how the recent wars had started. Unfortunately, their commanders could not provide any answers, as they were very much in the dark as well.
Looking through the windows of the USS Enterprise at the sight of the ships assembled in the harbor, Rear-Admiral Devon Maxwell whistled at the sight of all. Keeping an eye on the bay, he asked that captain of the ship, who was standing next to him, “What do you make of all this?â€

Chapter 1: War embers

Earth:
The view of the planet Earth from outer space was one of the most majestic ever seen. It contained a large mass of blue mixed in majestically with green and brown. Large, multiple patches of beautiful white clouds covered the entire region, enhancing the awe that astronauts felt as they orbited the Earth in their spaceships and the International Space Station.
However if one were to take a closer look at the Earth, they would see it engulfed in a mix of different colors, some of them that always proved deadly to the present inhabitants of the Earth. For as long as humanity lived on the blue-green planet, they have waged war on each other for many horrific reasons. As they continued to advance in technology, art, and literature, they found new ways to kill each other in horrific numbers. Sometimes though the fires of hell that they had unleashed would come back to haunt them in ways that seemed out of place for modern civilizations.
Now, though in this new century, the process repeated itself once more all over again. As the white-hot fires spread across the world once more, slowly but surely, they opened up grand horrors that would come back from the shadows to haunt them once more again.

October 25th, 2010
Pearl Harbor Hawaii
The main headquarters of US Pacific Command was one of the most well known and most important naval bases in the world. Sitting almost halfway across the Pacific, it functioned as a crossroads between the United States and Asia. History has long had a link with the region, particularly on December 7, 1941. While other momentous events have paled in comparison, they would soon follow the lead of the day that set the bar for them all.
So far, though, that provided little concern to the base, which was operating in a normal peaceful routine. Watching from the bridge of the carrier USS John C. Stennis, Rear-Admiral Swanson saw scores of ships moving back and forth across the water of the harbor. After observing the activities for several moments, he turned to one of his officers and said to him, "Alright once we're docked, I want the others commanders to report in so we can go over the results of the exercise."
Not far away, the USS Abraham Lincoln had also just docked and most of its crew already had departed off the huge carrier. Watching from the bridge, Vice-Admiral John Williams watched with a sour look on his face as the crew departed. Shrugging it off, the admiral turned to the other officers and said to them, "Keep an eye on the repairs and contact me immediately when they're finished." Before anyone could ask, the admiral smiled and said, "Consider this as part of your training since anything can happen very quickly." He left the surprised bridge crew and headed to his own quarters to check up on personal matters.
Watching from the tarmac on Ford Island, the CAGs of the two carriers had grim looks on their faces as they watched the last of their fighters land on the island. Although the two air wings performed well, they had made some mistakes that the two CAGs knew cost lives in a real war.
As he saw the last F/A-18E Super Hornet land on the tarmac, the CAG of the Stennis turned to his counterpart and said, "Once they all land, do you think that we should get together to discuss the latest result of this exercise.
His counterpart nodded before he added, "We'll need to talk to them about the issue of dealing with the advanced fighters the opposition had as well as work a bit on true anti-aircraft suppression." The Lincoln's CAG shivered as he remembered his own experience of combat as well as the briefings he read on the advancement of air-defense weapons.
Nodding in agreement, Stennis's CAG remarked quietly as he saw the pilots head away from their fighters, "Give them about 30 minutes then call the squadron leaders together." He soon walked off towards the hangers and the Lincoln's CAG shook his head before heading off towards his own office.

While Pearl Harbor was one of the most important naval bases in the world, it shared that distinction with a few others in terms of strategic value as well as historical impact. Japan's Yokosuka harbor shared that distinction for in terms of history, it served as an important naval arsenal for the former Imperial Japanese Navy and in the present, it served as the main base for the JMSDF as well as the United State's 7th fleet.
Watching from the shore, Rear-Admiral Kuribayashi felt impressed at the sight of the ships in front of him. Still though, that did not dispel his mood as though both sides had performed well in recent maneuvers, it showed deficiencies that Kuribayashi knew could prove dangerous in battle. The Japanese admiral shook his head before he headed to meet up with his counterparts to discuss the results and find out ideas for improvements.
He soon arrived at the meeting and the surprise that the commander of the JMSDF Admiral Toyohashi in the room as well. Before Kuribayashi could ask, the senior admiral replied, "Don't worry taisho, I'm just here to check in on how the exercise went." Looking first at the other commanders before turning to the window, Toyohashi then said, "With the way things are going out there, I felt that I needed a first hand perspective on performance."
Nodding at what his superior had said Kuribayashi saluted before he joined the other commanders as they were already looking over the notes that aides had already handed out to them all. Looking at the others as well as Toyohashi, the Japanese admiral sensed that this would be an interesting meeting.

October 25th, 2010
White House, Washington DC
While on the outside the world seemed to be at peace, many in the corridors of power knew from experience that it was a tenuous peace. Though many local conflicts did not usually expand to horrific nightmares, they had the potential to, which always concerned governments. It had proven true especially during the turn of the century and would prove true once more.
Arriving in the Oval Office, United States President Michael Lawrence felt the mood in the room. He shared their sentiments but tried to push it aside as he sat at his desk and told them all, "Alright gentlemen, this meeting is called to order." The others nodded at that before Lawrence turned to his secretary of defense, "So any changes from our last meeting."
Secretary of Defense Brian Swafford replied, "There are but after looking at them, I'd think that we'd all prefer that the situation remained the same." He looked at his notes for several moments before he told Lawrence, "Right now, South America seems to be calm but both Africa and the Central Asian countries are embroiled in trouble." His voice then turned somber as he continued on, "Adding to that, recent activities in the Pacific and the Northern Atlantic have me worried."
Alexis Carpenter, Secretary of State, nodded in agreement as she added, "I've just got word from our allies in the threatened sectors that they're very concerned about the state of affairs." She paused for a moment to take a sip of water before adding, "Negotiations with the countries that we should be worried about have been tedious at best both here and in New York as well." Her face turned grim as she then added, "Every time we bring up new concerns, they try to distract us, just throw it back in our faces and remind us of our own mistakes."
Wincing as he heard the statements from both his Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of State, Lawrence turned to his NSA chief Collins, "Anything you can produce to back up their concerns."
Collins shrugged and replied, "While we're still analyzing the information, we've managed to get photos of increased training within their borders as well as an increase in shipping at certain ports of concern." He then reminded them all, "Though it would be helpful if we could get some eyes on the ground to find out, I believe that my people have done the best they could in gathering the information."
Lawrence nodded in agreement, as he turned to look at his own copy of the notes and photographs in his own hands. Seeing nothing there of use, he stood up and walked outside to look at the window at the gates that surrounded the White House, hoping that they may provide any answers. A few minutes of silence developed before the US president turned to his cabinet and asked them all, "Is there anyway we can try to help forestall or delay them."
The looks on their faces told him their answers although some showed even higher degrees of worry than their colleagues did. Letting out a sigh, Lawrence said to his cabinet members, "Alright then I guess we have to do it the old fashioned way, tell your departments to draw up contingency plans as quickly as possible."
Everyone nodded at that as the meeting ended and they all began to depart. Within minutes, only President Lawrence remained in the room. With the sound of silence as his guide, the President turned to look at several photographs at his desk. His eyes eventually focused on a few that showed several people in uniform standing amidst a very hot jungle. Remembering dark thoughts of both long and recent past, Lawrence took a deep breath and silently asked himself a dark question before he departed the office and upstairs for a chance for some much-needed rest. Unfortunately, he knew from long bitter experience that no one got much rest if they were the president of the United States.

October 26th, 2010
Tokyo Japan
Literally, at the same time halfway across the Pacific Ocean, the leaders of another country were holding an urgent meeting. Like their American counterparts, the Japanese government had concerns about the recent activities and events in the region. Already several recent incidents had occurred between the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Forces and the other navies in the region. While the disputes had resolved peacefully, the fact that they got so close to war sent a chill through the spines of the military commanders and the politicians.
When Foreign Minister Shimizu received word from US Secretary of State Carpenter, Prime Minister Kimura felt that the time had come to deal with the situation. After both had looked over the information, the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister had distributed the information to the other ministries for their own people to look at. Along with that, the PM then sent a message for them to rendezvous at his residence to discuss the matter.
As aides served the guests water and tea, they all looked at their own copies of the notes with some of them looking at the reports from the other ministries. After a few long minutes passed, Prime Minister Kimura turned to look at the others as he said, “You all read the same reports that I have and now have caught up to speed.â€

Chapter 2: Crisis after crisis

October 28th, 2010
Pentagon, Washington DC
In his office, Secretary of Defense Brian Swafford looked over the latest notes he had from the field and from his fellow departments. In addition, he had one ear glued in to CNN as the reports continued to broadcast the latest news. While most of it was mainly meaningless, Swafford had learned well that sometimes to first hint of some trouble came in on the news.
Seeing that there was nothing new, Swafford switched off the television and contacted one of the aides in another room to ask if the others have arrived yet. Once the other person on the other end of the line said that they did, Swafford nodded and hung up before he gathered his notes. Making sure he had everything in order, he left his office and headed to meet up with the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The commanders who were in charge of the Army, Navy, and air force exchanged conversation with each other as well as their aides while they waited for Swafford to show up. Once they did, the three military men took their seats as their aides stood off to the side. As Swafford took his seat at the other end of the table, screens around the room began to light up and the meeting began.
Looking at his notes for a moment, Swafford told his three guests, "Thank you all for coming in on short notice", "By now you've all seen the recent reports so we might as well get down to it." He paused for a moment before he got to the point, "Are all your forces capable of action at the present time."
Having just returned from the field, the three chiefs looked at each other for a moment as if deciding who would go first. Eventually, US Chief of Naval Operations, Charles Hodge spoke first, "Right now the fleet is operating at excellent efficiency", "Still with the fact that a large number of them are due to return home for maintenance, it will stretch the fleet for a long period of time."
General Mark Barclay, commander of the US air force then gave his own information to Swafford, "While we're mostly operating at sufficient strength, a large portion of our strength is in the Middle East and most of the squadrons there have had to stand down many times to get some rest." He paused to make sure he did not miss anything before he added, "Also the constant combat operations has stretched our supplies and it is taking longer than expected to resupply them".
The General in command of the army winced as he delivered his own report to his audience, "Right now except for forces scattered throughout the world, most are in the Middle East and are heavily engaged in operations over there." His voice turned somber as he added, "Every time we withdraw troops for rest we have to send another unit in almost immediately with little chance to reorganize."
Swafford took a deep breath as he tried to absorb the information. While this was mostly expected, the news still stung the Secretary of Defense but he tried to restrain himself from voicing any more thoughts on the matter. After a few minutes of contemplation he said to them all, "All right then, this is how we'll do it", "General, order any units available to stand down for now and for others already engaged to send some of their officers abroad." He then turned to the CNO and the Air Force Chief and told them, "Signal your commands to order them to stand down and your commanders to prepare for long term operational deployments."
All three nodded and with that, the meeting ended as the Secretary of Defense left the room with the others following in close behind for a short while. Later when each of them reached their own respective officers, the group split up with all of them eager for a little privacy as they dealt with the news.
When Swafford returned to his office, he immediately locked the door and got himself a drink as he turned to look at the night sky outside of his office. Although some distance away, the Secretary of Defense saw lights on several government buildings still very much lit. Although some had rooms lit for regular business, Swafford could guess correctly that others had occupants just as busy as he was. Taking a large gulp, Swafford went back to work, knowing that it would be another long night.

October 30th, 2010, 6:30pm
Pearl Harbor Hawaii
Though it was getting dark, Pearl Harbor Naval Base rarely slept as the military and civilian personnel worked at different times during the day. That included the naval commanders who knew that a meeting could happen at any time with little notice. That was the case when word came down from PACCOM for a meeting in 30 minutes. When they read it, many of the commanders winced as they already had plans. Following orders, they all dropped them and soon headed to Makalapa Crater, which served as the main headquarters of the US Pacific Fleet.
As Rear-Admiral Brandon Swanson arrived at the building, he could see his fellow officers already chatting amongst themselves as they waited for the rest to arrive. Making his way to his counterpart aboard the Lincoln, Swanson immediately asked him, "Do you have any idea of what is going on here?"
Williams shrugged and said, "Not really much but only just rumors." His voice then became lower as he saw the rest of the audience arrive, "And now we're about to see if they're true or not." Both admirals turned to see CINCPACFLEET Admiral Patrick Bergen enter the room with his aides. Seeing that they would get answers, both took their own seats as CINCPACFLEET Admiral Patrick Bergen arrived in the room. Once he headed up to the head of the table, several screens came online as the meeting began.
Taking a minute to check to ensure everything was in order, Admiral Bergen began by stating, "Thank you all for coming in to this meeting on short noticeâ€
