So First off we have Non-kaiju lover Mrs Klen7's response to KING KONG ESCAPES! We watched the barebones DVD dubbed.

The Good
She said the Mechanikong suit was "fun"
Image

The Bad
She said that King Kongs face was terrible... especially his dead emotionless eyes.
Image

The Weird
When Dr Who shoots the native, she exclaimed "What a dick!".. when i laughed she said "C'mon there was only like one native on the island and this guy shoots him.. thats a total dick move"
Image

Overall
Overall she gives this movie 3 out 5 bananas, but she wants to make it known that these are cheesy bananas, not good ripe regular bananas

And for Kaiju lover Klen7 we have
The Good
Linda Miller. She is adorable.
Image

I also like the water snake, gorosaurus and mechanikong battles

I also like that Dr Who wears a cape. Capes are cool.
The Bad
Dr Who's bottom teeth.

The Weird
Element X reminded me of Unobtanium for some reason.

Overall
Overall I would give this movie 4 out 5 bananas but unlike Mrs Klen7, i would give it the good ripe bananas, not the cheesy bananas

I love the dub's line for when Dr. Who/Hu shoots that guy

"Yes, Yes. Kong's mine now."

You didn't listen to that poor old man at all did you?

Kong's eyes remind me of Homer Simpson's when he sees a doughnut

So, Gamera 2: Advent of Legion is pretty much amazing and easily one of the best kaiju films. Out of the 2 film Blu-ray I think I've watched GOTU once and Advent of Legion like 5 or 6 times. I adore this film.

Image
Legion is such an interesting villain, and is the first and only non-magical fantasy type villain in the trilogy and boy is he amazing. I love everything about its life cycle including the Mammoth Flower homage that completely works. I've also noticed something, I've always had a problem (more so in G3 and GMK) with the characters in Kaneko's films just sort of saying these random lines of mystical nonsense that don't really add up. He does the same thing here, but since everything is related to science it comes off as less awkward and in fact does its work well.

Image
Gamera looks better and while I really dig the design in G3, I think this is the most ideal Gamera design. I'm also a big fan of how nobody is really sure whether to accept Gamera as an ally over the course of the film despite Gamera showing up to stop the Legion. The interesting thing is that in a scene like the battle with Mother Legion as the helicopters are taking off, I don't really think Gamera is so far removed from the battle at the beginning of G3. Gamera was backing up really close to those people, and it wouldn't have surprised me if he had smashed them on accident. Furthermore, the distinction is made near the end that Gamera is there to protect all life, not just humanity. Gamera from GOTU to this just continues to move further and further away from the friend of all children/humanity role. It's a nice progression.

The effects are magnificent here. The CG work leaves a little to be desired but the only terrible piece is Gamera just before the legion swarm him. The rest of the time you can tell it's CG, but it's not so terrible to distract me from the film and the rest of the amazing work put into this film. This is probably my second or third favorite giant monster film period.

Sooo great. I wish I had a blu-ray player on this laptop so I could make a ton of screencaps, but I settled for what I found on tumblr.

So I did some glancing at the older threads trying to figure out what had been shown, what had nearly been chosen, and who had the least amount of chances to try this.

Sooo, I'm gonna nominate any of these people, just whoever posts first saying they'll do this week's thread:
Benjamin Haines, Thomas, or Xenorama
as they've only had one chance to do this.

As for films, here is a list of some underdogs who have nearly won
* indicates a film that has nearly won multiple times
Yonggary, Monster From the Deep *
Half Human*
War in Space*
War of the Gargantuas*
Super Inframan
Super Monster Gamera
Gamera the Brave
Ultraman: The Adventure Begins
Latitude Zero
The Valley of Gwangi
Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla 1974
Gamera vs. Barugon
Gamera vs. Jiger
Gamera vs. Guiron
Godzilla Raids Again
20 Million Miles to Earth

Not saying anybody HAS to nominate these films, but I recall us discussing briefly doing a week with a lot of the choices that hadn't managed to win but had come close. Again, you don't have to do that, but I just thought I'd make people aware of those films.

I watched King Kong Escapes about two and a half times over the last few days, but its only a short while ago that I finished watching it proper instead of having it on as background.

I have always loved this flick. Mainly because I love all things mecha, so Mechanikong is one of my favorite kaiju. On this viewing, and I think because I had been reading the posts here, I couldn't help but notice what is ultimately the worst part of the flick, the Kong face.

The movie has a cool plot, a colorful methodical villian, exotic locations, some of the best kaiju creations Toho has done in the form of Mechanikong(I'm biased), but moreso Gorosaurus. The Kong suit isn't even that bad. The suit acting is actually pretty decent, but it all comes down to that damn misshapen frozen upper lip and the undead eyes.

Image
Stealing one of Henry88's pics to illustrate my point. This is one of the few shots in the flick where the snout actually looks good because of the angle and the eyes look like they might have some life in them. Zoom in and unfortunately you can see the cataracts, rotate to another angle and the upper mouth retainer is clearly evident.

I've seen this movie dozens of times, and I've always recognized the Kong suit as a weak spot of the flick, but this go around the Kong face really bugged me. I think because of how great everything else is. Gorosaurus is excellent, and the sets are awesome. It's just a shame that the star of the film has facial features that make him look out of place.
