I agree and disagree..
I think usually the best take on a character is the first take, so why change it? Just because the Gamera trilogy is well done, is it different at all from the other examples of odd fan film ideas like the adult Sonic movie ect.
It seems like you have two arguments which conflict, that's why I am a little confused. You don't want people to remake films if their only purpose is to make it darker, more realistic ect.
But you give the films a pass if they're good...even if they miss the point of the original film, series, character ect? So people should try to make things darker and more realistic, but they should just aim to make quality work? Or should they just make their own new material if they are going to deviate in tone from the original work....I'd side with the later. The Gamera trilogy might have actually been a little cooler if Kaneko had just made his own kaiju...or am I alone there?
There are some times when going back to the source material is just plain wrong...I'll give you that. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles example was a good one...any attempt at going back and making a Turtle movie as a violent rated- R flick would completely fail. The Turtles, for better or worse, are popular because of the cartoons they were in and the toys they sold to children.....the original comics version is a totally seperate entity from what the public considers to be TMNT.
Batman is the same way...you could go back and have Batman kill people and only fight gangsters as he originally did, but that's not who Batman has become in the public eye.
Godzilla is the same way....he's no longer the same beast he was in 54....people assosiate, and want to see, Godzilla fight other brightly colored monsters, mechs and space aliens...
I hope I've made my case. To be fair, it's such a gray area that I know I've just made hypocritical statements as well...I guess this is one area where it really does just boil down to personal taste
