went sat and sun,big crowd for both days, and had lines out the door waiting for next show the biggest thing I noticed both days was an older 55+ plus age group. sunday a dad brought his little son,and a mom had 4 kids with her,but besides that a much older crowd. I had a thought that this older crowd were reliving some childhood memory of watching this movie (U.S version) as kids on B&W tv or they saw it at the theatre.and their were quite a few older people who could have seen it back in 1955.

This is working out quite nicely - Gojira will be in Chicago the week leading up to Godzilla being released. Catching both back to back nights is going to be a treat.

Kentucky Theater has 1:30 and 7:15 showings. I'm probably going to try for the 7:15, any other Kentuckians going to be there?

Made a thread about it already, but I thought I'd add that the Bellcourt Theater of Nashville has Gojira from May 9-11 (and Mothra, King Kong '33, and King Kong vs. Godzilla later this month).

As I'm Tennessee adjacent I'm quite happy

My wife and I are seeing Goji '54 this Sunday in Somerville, MA. This will be my second time seeing it on the big screen and I'm super excited to see the new restoration (the Criterion DVD was beautiful!). :D

So this is cool. I won two tickets to see the original Godzilla at the Denver Film Center from a raffle my local anime convention was doing.

Booked my day off since this is coming to my neck of the woods at last!

Saw this 60th anniversary restoration, IMO it was kind if disappointing. I'm sure they did what they could with what they had, it must've been a very raggedy print from which they mastered it, and some scenes still looks pretty rough, others murky. As far as the movie itself is concerned, I hadn't seen it for quite a few years. The audience did occasionally chuckle at the cheesy or dated moments, and there are some parts to which time is been unkind, but overall, some of it has held up pretty well, it's great to see where the legacy started. Happy 60th anniversary to the King!

I had the chance to see it at a theater in Dallas during the weekend of Comic Con and it was the the sharpest I had ever seen it. The best part of that night was getting to see Akira Takarada in person at the entrance there to do an intro and answer questions. Unforgettable!

I think it's just the fact that even the Criterion transfer - and the DCP derived from it - looks rough, murky, and even a little raggedy at times due to the fact that the original film elements look that way. The Criterion transfer is far and away the best the film has ever looked, and it is unlikely the film will ever look any better.

Restored Original GODZILLA Gets US Theatrical Release

Postby hanshotfirst1138 » Tue Sep 09, 2014 12:14 am

Yeah, I think the reality is that its relatively low budget production values (I'd assume it wasn't a huge production shot on high quality stock), the simple age of the film, and probably storage conditions are all factors. Like I said, the version I saw looked pretty rough, it didn't look anything like the reviews of the Blu-ray I've read. I'm wondering why, or if it was just my eyes playing tricks ;).

Yeah, the version I saw in theaters was clearly the one Criterion used for their BD as it looked quite clean.
