I had the opportunity to finally watch The Human Vapor a couple nights ago. I popped some corn, and sat down to watch.
I had never seen this before either, so I was not sure what to expect. I have seen the H-Man and if anything, I was expecting it to be some type of similar monster movie. It wasn't anywhere close. MekaGojira3k said it right by mentioning Phantom of the Opera. It's partly a love story, and not just between the Human Vapor and the object of his affection, but between the dutiful cop and the earnest reporter who have an adversarial relationship that is just simply fun to watch. The rest of the movie is a cop/detective story with the required sci-fi slant. It's a really good blend. I enjoyed this much more than I did The H-Man.
The subtitles were pretty good, but I wish that the Human Vapor would have referred to himself as "The Human Vapor" in them rather than as "The Gas Man", which doesn't quite have the same ominous reference. The movie has a very Japanese feeling with it focusing so much on the recital. This is introduced early on in the story. I expected it be a throwaway at that point, but was happy to see the story hinge so much on the recital.
She's pretty easy on the eyes too.
My favorite scene is when the Human Vapor enters the police station's holding cell. I love how as he walks through the bars, you see his clothes deflate and then re-inflate with appropriate swirling mists all around.
And lastly, I just enjoyed this shot towards the end.
It just shows how powerful the Human Vapor is. He has attained what he wanted, but at the cost of complete alienation. This moment is all he cares about, and this is probably the only point in the movie where he shows some humanity by telling the cop and reporter to help the unconscious man out of the building.
In summary, good movie. Definitely recommended.
