Criterion has a rule to not restore a film beyond what it looked like originally. Godzilla '54 has grain and scratches galore because of the conditions under which it was made, and if they went back and smoothed out those imperfections it would be changing the movie.

Are you guys so certain this was the Criterion print? I have my doubts because the version I saw at the Egytian Theater was clearly much more prestine than even the Crterion print which did have its noticable scratches (though maybe it is hard to notices blemishes on the big screen as opposed to a T.V.). I don't know all the of the facts, so I am only going on conjecture. Keith, or someone else involved might have the answer.

I know one thing for sure; compared to "Godzilla", The Universal Monster collection has been vastly improved beyond how bad they've looked over the years. Some look like they could have been made yesterday (in black and white, of coarse).
