Monster Zero x SciFi Japan - Archive Only

New 3DS looks cool, but I already have a 3DS XL and don't feel the need to upgrade really. I'd rather spend the money on a Wii U eventually

So I have been saving up for an Xbox One so that I could get the Master Chief Collection. Since the MCC's release date has been creeping up, I started looking at what other games I could also play on the Xbox One. As it turns out, there really aren't any other games that would justify the purchase that I can't already get on 360/PS3/Steam.

So I bought a Wii U. Walmart has a bundle right now that includes a deluxe Wii U, Nintendo Land, and MarioKart 8 for $300 (for the record, there is another bundle at other retailers that is basically the same, but has Super Mario 3D World instead of MarioKart 8 ). I also picked up DuckTales Remastered for $20.

Overall, I have been very satisfied. Strangely, out of the 3 games that I have, I think I like NintendoLand the least. The majority of the "attractions" are for single player and don't really make me want to keep coming back to play them. The multi-player attractions are fun, but I don't often have many friends over to be able to play those. I've never played the old Ducktales NES game, but my girlfriend loves classic platformers, so this is a great game for us to take turns playing.

MarioKart 8 steals the show here though. Having been a MarioKart fan since the N64 days, I'm very surprised with a lot of the tweaks and overhauls, and also VERY thankful for them. There is finally a way to block the blue shell! It is rare that you are in 1st place and get the "horn" item, but you feel so great when you block that blue shell. The "crazy 8" item is just that, 8 items spinning around you. The items given can be nice, but I honestly find them more distracting than helpful. Single player is a tad iffy. 50cc and 100cc are absolute cakewalks. If you've played a MarioKart game before, you'll plow through these. 150cc starts off at medium difficulty, but its not long before the difficulty curve gets pretty steep, and you ultimately revert to classic MarioKart shenanigans (getting blasted by 3 or 4 items in a row, and going from 1st to 8th in the process) (also, the CPU racers rubberband up to 1st place and it's VERY noticable). Online Multiplayer is also really great - a surprise for a Nintendo game. I haven't played online MarioKart (sans 3 or 4 races on MarioKart Wii), but this is a real treat. Matchmaking and track selection is a tad simplistic, but thats actually pretty nice. But, as with most other online games on Nintendo systems, there's no voice chat, which makes me a sad panda.

But, the Wii U has a dark side, and its name is "Wii Compatibility". Long story short, I haven't bothered transferring my data yet, and I may never - which is a shame since I was looking forward to not having two nearly identical consoles stacked on each other. I play Brawl, MarioKart Wii, and Virtual Console games on Gamecube controllers, as I'm sure many people do. But, there is absolutely no Gamecube functionality on the Wii U. But, there's still the Wii Classic Controller or Classic Controller Pro, right? Wrong - they're discontinued and its nearly impossible to find a Classic Controller Pro (I'm not even going to bother with the original Classic Controller) for less than $50. So, Gamecube, Classic Controller Pro, and (by preference) Classic Controllers aren't options (don't even bring up Wii Remote & Nunchuck). So then you might suggest that I just leave a few of my save games on the Wii, right? Wrong again, you must either transfer everything or transfer nothing. Oh, now you're suggesting that I backup my save data, and then restore it back to my Wii after my transfer? You silly fool, WRONG AGAIN! Brawl and MarioKart's data cannot be backed up because, for some reason, Wii Connect 24 prevents it. What is probably the most annoying is that the Wii U Pro controller is functionally identical to the Classic Controller, but isn't compatible on the Wii. But its not like that matters anyways - the Wii U Pro controller is nearly impossible to find in stores. But the upcoming Smash Bros is also bringing with it a Gamecube Controller adapter - I'm crossing my fingers and praying that this will allow Gamecube controller functionality for Wii Compatibility, but knowing Nintendo, I probably just need to keep my Wii handy.

Overall, I am very pleased with the Wii U, and I think that I'll have more fun out of it than I would with the Xbox One. I'm looking forward to new games like Smash Bros, Hyrule Warriors, Yoshi, StarFox, and Zelda. Not to mention the games that I need to catch up on like Super Mario 3D World, New Super Mario/Luigi Bros, Pikmin 3, and Rayman Legends. It's just a shame that Wii Compatibility is so frustrating.

Got my Wii U up and running the middle of last week. Played the Pikin Nintendoland game with the girlfriend well into the night. Got to the second to last stage. It was great fun playing together. I have Super Mario World 3D coming from Amazon (along with a few other extras like and HDMI splitter and a stand since I bought a referb from Nintendo).

And Nintendo being Nintendo, the Wii U is a tad finicky with some things, most online stuff for me. Both me and the GF have Wiis and I really should look into seeing if I can bring in data from both or if I can only do one. And I have my user with my NNID attached, she made hers and she couldn't do some things because she doesn't have a NNID, could both users share the same NNID or do we each have to get our own (which would that mean I couldn't play games she buys and downloads?).

But after re-re-re-confirming that Metal Gear Solid V is coming to PC, I have no real need to get a PS4 nor a XboxOne. I'm very satisfied with my PC and Nintendo machine.

Majora's Mask on 3DS. I wonder if they'l come out with a OoT/MM 3D bundle. I wanted to pick up OoT3D but I haven't gotten around to it. But I never played Majora's Mask so this will be a great way to get into it.

I'm liking what they're doing with the Amiibo integration in many of the games. And love that Mario Kart is becoming Nintendo Kart/Super Smash Kart. I'm not too keen on RTS style games but the weird literature inspired Code Name STEAM seems like a wacky X-Com and I'm sure people will love that.

You can now beat the hell out of that goddamned snickering dog from Duck Hunt in Smash Bros! It will be very cathartic.

Yay for more Monster Hunter tie ins! Wish they talked more about it and gave a release date.

Xenoblades looks great but I really haven't gotten into JRPS too much lately (unless you consider Fantasy Life a similar JRPG) but it look action-y enough for me.

And Splatoon, man. That looks like great fun. I just wish I had friends with a WiiU to play as a team in that. And I love the Quid vs Octopus single player campaign. Crazy colorful Nintendo. Screw you brown and grey gritty realistic shooters, I'm going to be a squid girl with a paint gun!

Wish they'd have something about the New 3DS coming stateside. Oh well still good news all around.

True, hopefully it gets an early year release, I mean it's coming to other terroritories by the end of the year like Australia so we shouldn't have to wait to long into the new year to get it. My guess is it'll come out along side Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate which is due out March 31st. That game really takes advantage of the new system.

We got my parents a Wii U for Christmas they where more excited about Netflix on it then the games well they're excited about the games.

Rumor has it the New 3DS will be out Feb 13th in the states due to a poster claiming so. I'm actually a little surprised that it'd be that early if it's true but I guess we'll find out tomorrow as Nintendo is having a Nintendo Direct at 6am PST/9am EST

The Metroid rumors are they only thing that interest me. I see no reason to get another new model of the 3DS when mine still works just fine.

I'm thinking the rumors are true because tonight we got a new 3DS case and on it says it supports New 3DS, 3DS Xl, 3DS and 2DS. It's an offically licensed product from Nintendo to boot. I honestly wasn't expecting the system to launch until March to cash in on Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate but I'll take a Feb 13 date.

Another interesting thing is that's a Friday and Nitendo seems to have switched to doing major releases on Fridays now so it does kind of add up.

The big things for me are that they're wrong on the N3DS release date and that there was no new Metroid game shown or announced.

There were some things that were accurate but it's inaccurate enough for me to hiss out "liiiiiiieeeeessssssss".

But I got to admit I am warming up to the N3DS. But I still have the same reservations about it, and would want to play around with one and see how the C-stick(button) feels before I even think about putting a penny down on one.

They wheren't wrong about the N3DS it launches on Feb 13 which is when those leaked posters said it would. Sadly the US is only getting the XL version. We're getting New Red, New Black, a MH4U Themed (Silverish/Plantinium color with a monster from the series on it) and a Majora's Mask Themed N3DS XL (Gold with Skull Kid on the front). So I'm not sure how they where wrong about the release date.

I'll probably be picking up the New 3DS XL New Black along with Majoras Mask on day one.

Nintendo will most likely save Metroid News for their E3 Direct.

Is it true there is going to be a Majora's Mask 3DS? I missed out on the ALBW one, so if this is true, I might be tempted to get a second 3DS. If for nothing else, hopefully an improved battery life and the bigger screen (assuming it is the XL like ALBW).

Yes it's true however it sold out already Kain no word if there will be more coming out.

Yeah, my GS said they can't do anymore preorders. Oh well, I'll just go to Target the day the machine comes out and buy one. If I still can't get one, then I'll probably just wait until the next Zelda edition comes out. I'm also weary because I was told it does not come with an AC adapter. It better have infinite battery life then.
