Here's a fun story:
When I first signed up for Xbox Live, I paid monthly. I would use my credit card to purchase monthly subscriptions to Xbox Live. At one point, I got a little too busy and figured I'd skip a month. My card was charged anyways, even though I didn't physically order the service myself. My debit account was overdrafted, which came with a nice fee too. I found out about Live's Credit Card Auto-Pay service (or whatever they call it), called in, and canceled it. A few months later I bought a year subscription since it was cheaper.
Fast forward one year. I've closed that old bank account, so the card I used is no longer active. I get a few desperate e-mails from Microsoft pleading me to renew my subscription and to keep feeding them money. I don't play online that much anymore, so I think I'll pass. Come to find out, they are once again trying to charge the same card to continue the service. Funny - I thought I canceled that. I just laughed at them as they tried to charge my old card and went about my business.
A few months later, I'm starting to get back into gaming. However, I cannot even sign into Xbox Live, they didn't downgrade my service to Silver. So I call them to find out what I have to do, since all of their online customer support doesn't list anything that helps me. The guy I talked to told me that I have a balance on my account, and that I need to call their internal collections service before I can even downgrade to silver. He gives me their phone number, and tells me their hours that they're open. They were open when I hung up with him.
I call their collections department and the department is closed. The automate message lists their hours - Monday through Friday from 6:00am to 8:00pm pacific time (I called around 7:50 eastern time). I call back the other hotline to figure out whats going on, and this guy can't tell me anything. He just recommends that I call back the collections hotline tomorrow.
Now, I work as a tech-support agent for Dish Network, so I know how much of a "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" job these guy's have. I was nice to both of them, but not so much to the second guy. I also know that its a bad idea to piss off the only people who can help you - which is something a lot of Dish Network customers cant fit through their heads.
So, I'll call their collections department tomorrow. I'll ask them why they thought it would be alright to charge me for service I didn't want, and that I told them "If I want it, I will pay for it."
I'll call their collections department tomorrow and tell them downgrade my account to silver. If they still want me to pay for the service I didn't want, then I'll ask if I can just make a new silver account, import all of my friends, and just deal with the inconvenience while keeping my money.
That just makes me think: Nintendo and Sony are starting to catch on to the online gaming thing - and as of now, they're both free. Granted their service sucks compared to Live, but there will come a day when the grass is greener on the other side, and Xbox will hopefully have to either lower their price, or just cut the whole price altogether. I'll say that I can't stand a damn thing with the Playstation logo on it since everything with that logo that I've touched was already broken from regular use. However, if Sony starts trying to catch up to the game (which I'll admit that it looks like they're making a good effort to do), I shouldn't have much problem pawning my 360 and getting a PS3. Who knows, maybe Sony and Nintendo treat their customers nicely so that they will keep paying them for their services and games.
Thoughts?
