Shogakukan "GFW Delux Treasure Version" Review!

Postby ebirahsmeg1 » Mon Mar 14, 2005 1:15 am

Well, I *finally* got my copy of Shogakukan's annual picture book for GFW, GFW Delux Treasure Version (gotta love that title :Big-th-up: )

Unlike most of Shogakukan's other G books accompanying their respective films which are usually in the 70 page range, this book is significantly longer at 103 pages. The color pictures are gorgeous and has several sections:

The first part of the book starts with what Shogakukan has been famous far....kaiju profiles where front, side, and the backs of suits are displayed. First they start with the King himself, Godzilla, followed in order by Angilas, Rodan, King Ceaser, Kumonga, Kamacuras, Ebirah, Hedora, Manda, Minya, Mothra, Gino, Gigan, Monster X, and the devil himself, KG! I particularly enjoyed how they show a long full shot of Manda, showing how long he is, then they break him into smaller sections to examine him more in detail....very cool. :th-up:

Next, the book covers pictures the Xians, the Mutants (in some of the shots the Mutants manage to look even dorkier than they did in the film...lol), and both the good and bad guys' space ships or main military vehicles that they used....even the Mutants' standard run of mill "police" vehicles are covered. After that section, the many Mecha of GFW are covered in front, back, and side profiles similar to how the kaiju themselves were featured, which include the Gotengo/Atragon, the Eclaire, Fire Dragon, and Rambling airships, as well as the film's fighter jets and tanks.

After that, we get beautiful, color, scene by scene sequences of the film's kaiju events. Once again, maybe it's just me being a big Manda fan, but I love the Manda pics the best as they have some awesome images of Manda battling the Gotengo amidst the backdrop of lava and fire. At the end of this section is are cutout papers figures of Atragon/Gotengo and some sort of paper Godzilla hat...wierd :? Just the thought of anyone cuting on or taking a scissors anywhere near any part of this book makes me very angry and violent :x :turnbad:

The rest of book then covers pre-production photos of some interesting shots of the suits being made that I have yet to see online (and believe me, there are a ton of pre-production shots online, so nice that this book features ones not seen online thus far). Also a very small part of this section has black and white photos of basically each kaiju's past incarnations as well as a big world map which points to different parts of the globe each kaiju attacks.

Overall, this is another outstanding book from Shogakukan...they really are the standard from which all other G books should be measured by. I don't really have any criticisms....but one thing I would love to see from any G book are cut/aways of the organs, body parts, and inner workings of each kaiju. I have always found those types of books fun and interesting, but have never gotten my hands on a book like this(and I know there are few floating out there...can't remember the books' names though). Also, I don't care what some may claim, I know there had to have been other kaiju considered for this film that didn't make it(Gorosaurus and MG are 2 common rumors) and I would like to someday see some pre-production drawings or info regarding unused kaiju that were considered, but ultimately didn't make the cut. Anyways, snatch this book up while you can folks! It's probably the best GFW book released to date and will be very hard to top. :calvin:  :color:   :bouncy:  :flag:
