I have the original commercial that Nike made with Toho's full endorsement and some nice effects from ILM. It was an ad campaign, yes. The comic, the commercial and several posters were all released to coincide with the commercial. You can find it on YouTube probably..

I also have this very same poster hanging in my room right now, only I wouldn't have ever thought it to be worth more than like $30. I've had it since i was a kid though and don't wanna sell it.

I also have the comic. Its friggin stupid, but our very own Keith Aiken did the inking work!

And yes, Barkley beats Godzilla, but not in a fight... IN A GAME OF BASKEBALL, COMPLETE WITH GODZILLA WEARING NIKE SNEAKERS

GODZILLA VS CHARLES BARKLEY was a Nike ad campaign in 1992. There were two TV commercials, posters, shirts, etc.

I worked on the Dark Horse GODZILLA VS BARKLEY comic, which came out in 1994. It was licensed thru Toho, Nike, and Charles Barkley so everything had to be approved by all three. Nike wanted their shoes drawn precisely so they sent me one of the shoes to use as art reference. When the comic was done, Nike told me to return the shoe to them. :D
