The Theoretical Future of Kaiju Merchandise
So let me start off by saying this is simply theoretical, but i thought it might make for interesting conversation...
We have seen how technology can change the world and pop culture. 5 years ago i had 6 video rental stores within 15 miles of my house, today there are none. Digital distribution and automated kiosks have replaced the video rental experience (no more wandering the aisles deciding what to rent or checking to see if someone just returned the latest new release), now its just a few clicks on a screen a perfect digital representation is on your screen... with no fear of late fees.
Just recently we have been seeing 3D printers showing up a lot in the news, playing a role in a wide variety of topics ranging from to . So if 3D printing becomes , how long until it would start affecting things like collectibles or merchandise? You could buy digital blue prints directly from Marmit or X-Plus, or the latest kit directly from Yuji Sakai. Digital distribution would eliminate limited runs and international shipping, and no figure would ever be "out of production" or rare. Would rampant piracy be an issue? Would we see a flood of bootlegs as 3D scanners reintroduce old sculpts to the market? Would the market fight the trends like the music industry and suffer, or embrace it like the movie industry and thrive?
Granted the technology for all this is not in place, but it raises some interesting questions to me.
Thoughts? Ramblings?
