Weekly Character Spotlight #12: Ultraman 1966

Against protestations by a very active member of the weekly viewing thread, I will *not* be selecting the Gohten for the spotlight. I wanted to pick something of which I had more than one figure representation, and something a little different out of my collection. And rather than worrying about the selection process of the overwhelming number of Ultraman kaiju, why not start off with the Ultraman who started it all? This week's spotlight is on the original Ultraman!

I found this on ebay years ago while I was looking for a decent poseable Ultraman figure. Its the Action Hero Series Ultraman, measuring at about 6.75" tall. It's decently poseable, the knees are a little odd and the waist looks a little wonky, but I don't think I'd ever be able to part with this figure because of its best attribute: sound effects! When you turn on the on/off switch on the back, it makes the beta capsule noise, and when you hit the blue indicator on the chest, it makes one of two Ultraman fight sounds.

By the way, my suggestion for covering Ultraman kaiju is for someone to call the spotlight "Random Ultraman Kaiju" or some such with the rule being that each poster is allowed to pick their own kaiju, but they can only post pics of whatever may have been released for that particular kaiju, nothing else.

I love the idea of Ultraman this week!! (I'll have to post a pic later, the only original Ultraman I'll own will be a Art Storm figure but I don't have it in hand yet).

I also, really, really like the idea you have for Ultra Kaiju weeks. We can all post pics of whatever kaiju we want, but we are each limited to only one kaiju for that particular thread. Seems fair and logical.

Darn. I used to have an original Ultraman mask, but it melted in storage... I am devoid of any Ultramen to show off...

I've given Ultraman more than a fair chance but just absolutely can not get into the character or any of his shows. So it follows that I don't have any ultraman figures... Here's to next week!

I'd love to see a side by side with version 1. What all was improved in version 2? I have the first version, and the left forearm keeps popping off, plus posing with the beam accessory is a pain, so it kind of put me off looking any further into the second release.

I almost forgot...I had this "Chaiyo" version of a smaller Ultraman figure I bought at Tower Records (when it was in my city) years ago. I was just in there one day and saw it with a bunch of other Ultras. I bought Mother of Ultra and this particular Ultraman that day. They also had Zoffy and I think Ultraseven then. This was before I came to hear about the Chaiyo and Tsuburaya Ultraman rights dispute.

on the back of the left leg, it reads "Tsuburaya Chaiyo 2003. Made in China".
