Kaiu Toy Spotlight: Takara Sparkie Monsters

Toy pickins in the 1980s were pretty slim for the kaiju collector. As far as Godzilla was concerned we had to take whatever we could get. The few '80s items I have in my collection are some of my favorite toys for pure sentimental nostalgic reasons. Among those toys are these super deformed "sparking" monsters released by Takara.

Image

A slew of these things were released in the mid-to-late part of the decade. After striking the bottom of the figure against a hard surface a few times the toys would speed away on a little rubber wheel spitting sparks out of a opening in their mouths, or in the chest as was the case with the Ultraman figure shown here. Some of them worked better than others. I was never able to make Ultraman travel very far before it toppled over on it's face with a screech. The best sparkies were definitely King Ghidora and Mechagodzilla thanks to their colorful shiny appearance.

Image

I really don't know exactly how many of these were released, at least during the original time frame I'm discussing here. I've seen sparkies of Gamera and Daimajin but was never able to purchase them. Additionally, these little toys have been reissued several times over the years, usually as keychains. The Minya shown above was actually attached to a keychain, which was easily removed. Sparkies based on several of the Gamera kaiju were also made available recently, some cast in clear plastic in order make the inner sparking mechanism visible. There could be many, many more of these available that I'm not aware of, so any and all information would be helpful.

Lastly, it's interesting to note that the Baragon, Angilas and brown Mechagodzilla shown above are actually bootlegs, and are of much poorer quality than the legit Takara figures. The licensing information has been removed from the bottom of the toys and the sparking mechanism was obviously done on the cheap and would break easily. None of the three figures above work properly anymore.

For a Godzilla fan in the 1980s the severe lack of available toys was frustrating. That could be why these little sparkies were so cool. They'd be no big deal today but for the time they were really fun little toys. Spark on, little kaiju!

I have a few deformed toys of my own, my faves being a large Godzilla and matching King Ghidorah banks with sound (when coins are added). Typically the deformed items have never been a priority for me since I tend to favor figures that are the most accurate and true to the original screen design. Still, the nostalgia appeal of these items are hard to match.

The Takara Lady Milk - Lovely Angel Godzilla sparkies have to be just about the toughest sparkies to find, let alone finding a complete set (which to my knowledge consisted of the six in this photo).

This series came out in either 1983 or 1984 and the concept of Godzilla dressed up in drag has to be among the goofiest licensed Godzilla items one can find!! Of course, that crazyness is what drew me to them when I bought my first ones 10 years ago when eBay started busting loose.

As shown in the picture, top row:
1. Cheerleader with yellow dress, pom poms and whistle
2. Train ticket taker with dixie cup hat and ticket box
3. Girl with red polka dot dress and radio

Bottom row:
4. Girl with red plaid dress and wrapped gift
5. Playboy bunny waitress with drinks tray
6. Bride in white gown with veil and flower bouquet

It took me a long time to get this set in mint condition, I recall from three different transactions. As I have a lot of weird and esoteric Godzilla items in my collection, this set is right up there in my top five and among my most appreciated !!

Man, I never knew those even existed. And they say the Americans always treated Godzilla with little respect. LOL

The Takara Lady Milk have got to be one of the more priceless items of any Godzilla merchandise! That's just cute.

Like I said, Godzilla is also Japan's Snoopy (who dressed up a lot, too)!
