The Vinyl Figure Awards round 50: GODZILLA 1965 REMATCH

Postby Legion » Sun Nov 04, 2007 11:46 am

And here we are at the very last round this year, and probably the last round for a very, very long time as I'm pretty much out of kaiju. Let's see what next year brings.

The final rematch goes to the 1965 Godzilla variation from Monster Zero (also known today by it's official, pathetically broken English title of Invasion of Astro Monster.) There have been a really nice pair of '65 Godzilla figures that have come into my collection since last year and they look to give the old champions a run for their money.

The Champions:

Bandai's 6" Memorial Box 1965 Godzilla, released in 2005.
Previous standing: first place

Image
Marmit's Vinyl Paradise 1965 Godzilla, released in 1998.
Previous standing: second place

Image
This 1965 Godzilla is from Marmit's Parababy line, and was released in 2002.
Previous standing: third place

The Challengers:

Here's Gigabrain's 1965 Godzilla, initially released in 2006. The standard released is in the middle, and show exclusives sandwich it.

Finally, this is Pilot Ace's 1965 Godzilla, one of their most recent Godzilla figures, and released this past summer.

I really, really like the Gigabrain figure, but there's no denying that the Bandai toy was the best figure in that entire Memorial Box set. Love the eyes.

Bandai Memorial Box, by far. That is a gorgeous figure. The others just don't quite compare, and it looks like the votes are reflecting that. The Marmit Parababy is pretty cute, though.

The last time I voted for the Bandai, but this time the Gigabrain gets my vote. I really love that figure, the pictures that are up really don't do it justice. It's one of those figures you have to hold in your hand to get the full effect. I own the black and silver one and love it. While i'm not surprised that Bandai took the gold, i'm pleased to see that Gigabrain got 2nd place.

LOL there goes our unanimous results.

Your right, Dagarah, the Gigabrain really is a cool figure. You do have to own it and hold it in your hands to really appreciate it. It's a little stiff I'll admit but that's forgivable considering it was Gigabrain's first Godzilla figure. And the head sculpt is dead on, especially from a side view or back 3/4 angle. The quality of the head sculpt is most pronounced on the red version you said you own.

My only real gripe on this figure is that the green and red versions have strangely painted, round pupils, distracting from the beautiful head sculpt.

But all in all, the Bandai figure is a perfect package, and that's why I prefer it.

That Bandai figure is a work of art. No contest on this one.

I like the form of the Gigabrain, but the skin texture really turns me off from it. With the coloring and the sheen, it almost looks like fur or feathers, rather than scales, especially on the show variants.

Well I really like all of these figures, but my favorite of the group is probably the Pilot Ace. Sure, the colors aren't the most accurate, and the Bandai really has a better sculpt, but I think that the PA really catches the whole feel of the 65 Godzilla. Well, to me at least.

This was a real tough choice, it would have been a lot easier to pick which one I liked the least, but my vote goes to the Parababy. I think this one does the best job of looking like a toy that looks like a good rendition of the suit(I hope that makes some kind of sense).

...Like, better than the Bandai?

...Which is spot-on?

Maybe I don't see what you're saying. You say the Parababy does a good job of being...a toy...that looks like a toy...that looks like a representation of the suit...?
