The Vinyl Figure Awards round 35: KING KONG

There haven't been a lot of vinyl figures featuring the Toho version of King Kong, and that's generally been because of licensing reasons. Regardless, a few Japanese King Kong figures have been released over the years.

Here's Marusan's Kong figure...or make that Marusan's Giant Gorilla, which is what this figure is commonly called. The original version (seen on the left) was released in 1967 and is one of the tougher Marusan figures to obtain. On the right is a slightly rescaled reissue from 1998.

This Bandai Kong is the only figure in this poll that was actually licensed and carried the King Kong name. It was released in 1993.

In 2006 a company apparently known as APES released these two Kongs, which feature different head sculpts on the same body. They were the first company to release the 1967 Kong (right) in vinyl form. Since they share so much of the same sculpt they're both included here.

Another case of different head sculpts on the same body, these Kongs were put out by a company known as Raymundo Toys in 2007

As much as I want to vote for the Marusan figure, I really like the APES Kongs. Even with the reused bodies I think the sculpts are really good, and it's awesome to finally get a full-sized 1967 Kong. I like the Bandai Kong too, especially for the time it was made. I don't really like the Raymundo figures though. They're just really bland.

So in the end I voted for the APES figures.

EDIT: Is there any way I can fix the title of this thread? "King King". That's what I get for not paying attention.

I went Marusan. The Bandai loses it because of the size discrepency with the '62 Godzilla and I really don't get anything out of the APES or Raymundo.

The Marusan just has this fun vibe. Cool little toy.

APES for me as well. I like the realistic coloring of the Bandai, but the APES figures just seem better over all.

APES, without a doubt. The Raymondo's are hideous, and really look nothing like the actual suits. Especially the 67 Kong, which looks like one of the characters from "Planet of the Apes".
