"Location Location Location."
At first glance, it would seem like the right kind of place. It's a tragically hip minimall that's got really neat architectural things going on, and is always busy, there's an Urban Outfitters clothing store there, a coffehouse, some other clothing stores, a techno store run by a very successful local dj, a jewelry store, a sushi restaurant, and a Cuban restaurant. BUT, I have seen a lot of businesses come and go from there, from a cigar store another friend of mine had, to retro furniture to skateboard clothes and everything in between. I hear the owners are a little difficult.
And when it comes down to it, amongst that tragically hip crowd (everyone shows up in the same standard issue Emo wear, it seems

), manga, anime and kaiju is not high on the list of popularity. Whenever I was there, there was traffic, but many times it was dead, and people that did wander in wandered right back out, with that Aura of..."Oh. JapaNESE stuff. WhatEVER..."
Now, there's a couple malls here in Orange County that have had manga stores for almost a decade and they seem to be doing okay, but they were heavy on Pokemon, which seems to be the extent of most people's knowledge of Japanese culture. Time for me to say..."whatEVER..."
But those malls were HUGE, and had the benefit of thousands of people walking by. The kind of malls that have 21plex cinema's Wolfgang Puck's, game arcades, Dave & Busters, and scores of other big name draws.
And with those kind of locations comes the overhead and regulations imposed by the management offices there. I know how those were as well. My friend who had the cigar store started out in one of those malls in a sales kiosk, and his girlfriend worked in one of those management offices. Lots of hoops to jump through.
"Oh, yeah, starting your own business frees you up, and you're your own boss."
Uhh...I had my own store for five years in Laguna Beach. What a nice illusion that must be. Living it is another story.
Anyways, the owner is gone as of today, will be back Sunday when we start pulling things down. He has a friend working in the place over the next coupla days.
