Ok, I ended up scoring some nice stuff at Toy Tokyo today. I'm honestly amazed at how much new stuff they've actually have, and how much their Godzilla selection has increased since the last time I was there. I picked up a bunch of stuff, including a show exclusive black and metallic blue Marmit 1968 Godzilla. For some reason I forgot to take a picture of it, but since my camera actually uploaded the other photos on the first attempt I was thankful just to not have any aggravation this time. I think John (Kaiju Zoo) posted a picture of it in this thread quite a while back when it was first released.

Before I talk about today's scores, I might as well post some pictures of the CCP Fujimiya Godzilla.

One great thing about CCP's figures is that they all look good from the back:

Image

I never quite understood Marmit's short-lived mid-sized line. A few Godzilla's were released in 2004, including a '54 and a '62, but the series never took off. Probably because the designs were a major step back from even the Para Babies of the time. But they did release one figure in this line that - as of now - they haven't released in any other. That being the 1984 Godzilla. It's uniqueness is pretty much the only reason I got this toy, plus it kind of has this neat Popy feel about it.

Image

I definitely wanted to get more Gamera Para Babies after getting the Guiron recently, so I was definitely quite happy to come across a Toy Festival Para Baby set featuring Jiger and a wounded Gamera. I'm not really feeling the colors on the Jiger but I do like the sculpt. It's no X-Plus but it's still nice. The Gamera is also pretty cool. I would actually like to find standard versions of both of these figures, as well as other Para Baby (and Monster Heaven) Gamera figures.

Image

My best discovery of the weekend literally made my jaw hit the floor. Mainly because I didn't even know it was out. It was a Super Festival exclusive Marmit Burning Godzilla. While the mail order version is going to be orange and teal, this version is completely orange. As such it makes it a lot easier to compare this toy with the Bandai Meltdown Godzilla. While the Bandai figure has slightly better proportions, the Marmit figure just mops the floor with it in every other possible way. Photos don't really do it justice. The clear yellow and orange vinyl has glitter imbedded inside of it and is simply so much more eye catching than the Bandai toy. And the sculpt is amazing, especially the head, which is dead on accurate to the 1995 Godzilla suit. Additionally this figure marks one of the only times Marmit has paid special attention to the eyes of a Godzilla toy, and the results are fantastic. Definitely one of Marmit's very best, at least in my opinion. (Forgive the appearance of the Bandai figure in the following photos, it's been sitting on a shelf untouched for quite a while and I didn't feel like dusting it off.)

Whoa. I don't even care about the stumpy tail, though the bulb at the end reminds me too much of that annoying way it was drawn in the Dark Horse comics. I hated that. Otherwise, I give it two thumbs up. :D It would have been nice if this was the standard release, since I didn't like the teal much. Don't make me buy more Marmits!

I don't really know the details on the CCP Godzilla, Tim. It definitely is a brand new release, along with a rerelease of the crawling Hedora that came with the first version. The CCP GMK Godzilla is also out if ebay is an indication.

And here's a side pic of of the 1984 Godzilla for Canofhumdingers...

Image

It's about 7" inches tall, about a head taller than a Parababy. It actually looks like something that would have come out in 1984, to be honest.

Eh, you know I really wouldn't even want to compare them (or any Bandai's to Marmits, anymore). They're two obviously different toys that aimed for two different ideas. The Bandai went for a realistic portrayal of Godzilla from the movie while the Marmit is clearly more interpretive and artistic in its design.

I think both look good (especially considering that the Bandai is twelve years old) but I think the Marmit may have even looked a little more interesting with more color in the body of the figure. The way the orange blends in and out of the chest and belly of the Bandai is really eye-grabbing.

I will say that the way the Marmit hunches a little and the head leans forward is a perfect portrayal of Godzilla's pose from the film. The Bandai stands a little too erect than Godzilla would carry himself in the movie, so that's a definite plus for the Marmit figure.

thanks for the pic legion. Didn't marmit also release a G84 in the monster heaven series? At first, that's what i thought you'd gotten, but i guess this is a new figure.

Oh, btw, if anyone has good pics of the MH G84, i'd love to see those too...

EDIT: is this the same figure you just got legion? I knew i'd seen a marmit G84 on clubtokyo, it just took me a while to find it. I thought it was a monster heaven, but i guess there's not one..?

West Kenji Kiryu MechaGodzilla

Postby KaijuZoo » Sun May 27, 2007 6:52 pm

I got this cute little Kiryu MG figure last week and consider it a marvelous addition to my MechaGodzilla collection. The amount of detailing in the sculpt and painting needs to be seen in person, it's really quite awesome for a toy this small (5"). West Kenji = :th-up:

Now my motorized Bandai SD MechaGodzilla is not so lonesome for someone to play with !!

Tim: The Marmit '95 Godzilla is just one of those toys that you really need to hold in your hands. Like I said before, pictures don't really do the coloring justice. The photos here make it look like a big orange blob for the most part. I love the way the orange color injected into the yellow vinyl doesn't go all the way into the fin tips or the finger nails. Aside from the eyes, there's actually no paint applied to the toy but the glitter really helps the overall look. In my opinion, this figure represents the meltdown much better than the Bandai version, which is just milky translucent orange vinyl with red spray paint. And the eyes...wow.

The Bandai figure is definitely nice for a mass produced toy created over 11 years ago. But it shows the limitations of the time, especially where the fins are concerned. I'm sure if Bandai did a brand new Burning/Meltdown figure now it would be fantastic, but that's certainly not going to happen at this point. Also worth pointing out that the original Burning Godzilla sculpt suffers from a problem that many Bandai figures suffer from: the fact that it was designed while Godzilla vs Destroyer was still in production. In fact, it was released well over a month before the movie hit theatres. My guess is that Bandai only had a few photos and preproduction art to work off of, certainly not enough to translate the personality and nuances of Godzilla's character into toy form. The stance is wrong (more like the stance of the '93 Godzilla honestly), the placement and shape of the fins are wrong (where the solitary fin at the base of Godzilla's neck?), and the head is completely off. The '95 suit was gigantic, a byproduct of having what was probably a hundred pounds of wires, lights and tubing inside of it. The Bandai figure doesn't reflect that at all the way the Marmit does. Tim, if I can I'll bring this figure to G-Fest so you can get a better look at it.

Canofhumdingers: Marmit never did a full size Monster Heaven '84 Godzilla. The Godzilla I picked up was from a very short-lived 7" series Marmit did in 2004. So yes, my figure and the one you linked from CT are the same. But if Marmit was to create an '84 Godzilla for the MH line I'm sure it'd be beautiful.

That Marmit orange glitter G95 is simply awesome!

Ok, now that i've stopped drooling I recently picked up a Trendmasters Biollante and a Marmit Vinyl Paradise Magma.
