Godzilla, King of the Monsters on BD 8/27!

Just found out that G:KotM will be released on Blu on 8/27! Boy, they didn't waste any time getting this one out. I don't know if it's because of Godzilla vs. Kong coming out in March or what, but at this rate, I'll be watching this at home and Endgame will still be in theaters! And maybe it's just me, but boy did the trailer for it look good! A lot cleaner than what I remember. No idea as yet what extra's will be offered, but it seems as though I do remember some mention(I think from Dougherty himself)that there will be a directors cut. Of course there were all kinds of promises made when Edwards cut was getting ready for release, so who knows. Anywhoo, just thought I'd pass the info along.

Endgame comes out on BRD 8/13, two weeks before KotM. I know it came out theatrically about 5 weeks after Endgame, but theatrical run really isn't relevant here. (And yes some more popular films will stay in theaters even after they are released on home media for a short time)Pretty much any large Hollywood movie is getting released on home media around the 90 day mark, and to digital services even before that.

I think the only cases of a movie really tanking that sped up it's media release would be something like Monster Truck. That film was out of theaters in less than five weeks, and *seemingly* on DVD in about 2 months, but again my memory could be faulty.

The digital release for the movie is the anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing, which is both incredibly tone-deaf and nigh-comedically on-brand for this movie.

True, I still purchase DVD's occasionally because not everything is available on BRD. And TBH, I really don't notice a difference. I only purchased an HDTV in 2011 when my older TV finally ceased to function. We inherited a larger (but older) HDTV from a relative, but it has some issues, and basically I'm just holding my other one in reserve, not sure if/when I'll get a 4K TV. I'll probably get a 4K player before the TV, as long as it is still fully BWC with BRD and DVD. (that's a lot of acronyms)

So far the store exclusives I've seen are from Best Buy: a 4K steelbook and a 3D BD set. Walmart is listing what appears to be a single disc DVD release that might be exclusive?

Anyone else find something different?

Looks like they've put together a much stronger package than we got for G2014. I'm looking forward to the audio commentary and deleted scenes in particular. I wonder if people will be able to see what's going on in this one without tuning their TV to THX standards first.

It's annoying that I can't justify importing this instead of waiting the extra six weeks for the UK release. Back in 2014, importing that year's movie cost about £18 shipped, only £3 more than the local release a month later. But, between the higher Amazon price pushing it over the VAT-free threshold and the much worse exchange rate, it would be double that to import KotM.

The Zavvi and... it’s a German shop, I forget the name, Steelbooks look to put the standard one that the US gets at Best Buy to shame, but Zavvi is sold out and don’t feel like shelling out the extra to middleman the other one. It’s still fine and features all the main kaiju.

Sampling some of the special features right now. It's great when a studio release is packed like it's the mid-2000s all over again: a ton of behind-the-scenes featurettes, commentary track from the director, and (why is this so rare these days?) all the trailers!

Also, I just got the standard Blu-ray edition and, while I'm not too terribly enthused with the cover art, the blue and yellow colors on the spine really make it stand out amid the rest of my Godzilla Blu-rays, which tend to have dark, rather plain spines (which I just realize).

Can anyone comment on the sound mix? Is it still as obnoxiously loud as it was in the cinema? Is the music still buried in the mix?

I'm holding off on this until it's reasonably priced. I have little desire to revisit the movie (and I liked it a LOT in theaters), and I've already heard the biggest "highlights" of Dougherty's commentary which are...problematic to say the least. While other movies in the franchise have either ignored the nuclear message completely (just look at like...half the movies) or botched it (Megalon, Shin, various Heisei entries) to some extent or another, there's never been a PRO-nuke movie in this franchise....

...until now.
Dougherty apparently says things on the commentary along the lines of:
-If I could release nuclear monsters into the world with the push of a button I absolutely would.
-Humanity doesn't deserve to exist
-Nature should overtake the Earth
-John Hammond was right to clone the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park because 'why not?'
-This movie's 'science' with regards to radiation was inspired by Star Trek 2
-Chernobyl was a GOOD THING because nature has re-taken the area and it's better off now than it was before.

These things paint a pretty clear picture of Dougherty's intent: that setting off nukes and letting loose radioactive nightmare creatures that would poison the Earth would be a GOOD THING, because he doesn't understand how radiation works and thinks it'd be good if we all nuked each other into oblivion because "everything is better in Chernobyl now" (despite the science not supporting that claim at all). I was giving it something of the benefit of the doubt before, in thinking that maybe he just didn't really consider what he was doing and what he was saying, but it seems like he did. And it's horrible.

I started listening to the commentary last night. Only got about 20 minuets in because it was so late. I'll finish listening to it tonight probably. Isolated quotes are often taken out of context. Still, I'll follow up if any of that is true. Michel Dougherty, Zach Shields and O'Shea Jackson Jr. are all on it, and TBH I often cant tell the difference between when Dougherty and Shields are speaking because their voices are so similar. I only know that Dougherty and Jackson are big Godzilla fans, while Shields was not, and Dougherty indoctrinated him with several films while they were working together on this one.

One example I can think of is, during one of the special features Dougherty mentions that Mothra is the *Only female Kaiju*, even I started mentally in my head playing keyboard warrior... "But what about Biollante!!!"...but then, I determined, he was speaking in the context of THIS film.

Picked this up and watched it yesterday...and I'm kind of wishing I hadn't. This movie(for me, anyways)just does not hold up well to repeat viewings, especially as far as the effects go. Now, it's no secret that I was not a fan of Edwards Godzilla, I was not a fan of his directing(or lack thereof), but one thing I'll always agree with, the movie was beautiful to look at. The monsters were handled well and looked quite convincing. Then came Skull Island, a movie I found very entertaining with some equally gorgeous DAYTIME shots. So I expected that this movie(G:KotM)to continue this trend of improvement. As we all know, that didn't happen. As to the story and characters, I found them...adequate? Pretty much exactly what I'd come to expect from the Heisei series of films.(too many characters, too many plot points, ect., ect.) So that, I could look past. The effects, on the other hand, are some of the poorest I've seen in a film in a while. Mothra came off the worst, imo. There are some scenes(especially the larval sequences)where it looks like they used a placeholder and forgot to include the finished effect. She literally looks transparent. Getting overly carried away with her bio-luminescence didn't help, either. The other monsters really didn't fare much better. Everything was just too hard to see and could be quite headache inducing. As to the Blu-Ray itself, it looks about as good as it can, considering the source material. The audio, to me anyway, comes off quite well as I found it a lot clearer than when I saw this in the theater. Don't get me wrong, there are still plenty of instances where the soundtrack gets lost in the action, but the themes(Godzilla and Mothra) came across better than from previous viewings at the local cinema. I haven't checked out the special features, yet. I may look into those tonight. Which brings me to this...I will see Godzilla vs. Kong when it's released, but, to be honest, I won't be terribly sad once Legendary's run is over. Finally getting a chance to see this on my home theater has pretty much solidified that opinion. Oh, and my apologies to all for turning this from a Blu Ray review to a general movie review.
