Aquaman is a 4K HDR marvel. If you really want to be blown away by the format watch that. The Blade Runner movies look really good too. I've only watched the first one but I guess the sequel is also demo worthy. I haven't watched it myself but Mad Max Fury Road is supposed to be good on the format too.

Finally Pac Rim 2 is really good from what I saw.

It’s not that it’s “bad”. It’s that it’s revisionist. They only offer the new soundtrack with new new sound effects. You cannot listen to the original soundtrack as it was presented in its original theatrical release because they didn’t include the original track on the disc. And while the image may look sharp, the color timing has been altered significantly. The colors look quite different on the 4K disc than they ever have before and, again, it does NOT look like it did when originally released. So the 4K disc doesn’t sound like the original and it doesn’t look like the original film. Did you watch the YouTube review I posted? It very clearly explains this with side by side audio and visual comparisons to show you how the 4K disc looks and sounds quite different from how the film was originally.

^I’d be curious to know how the colors look on your screen, John. The complaints are common enough that I do believe the color timing was altered for the Batman ‘89 4K disc, but I know that there are a lot of problems with the lack of standardization in HDR authoring and presentation. Case in point, some people are having major issues with the 4K Star Wars films on Disney+. On some setups they display properly and look really great, while on others they display as very flat and low contrast which makes them look very dull. From what some more knowledgeable people have said about it, it sounds like a tone mapping issue.

I'm hoping film studios ban together along with TV manufactures to get a standard for HDR content. I know MS and Sony along with several game studios and TV manufactures created a group called HGIG (HDR Gaming Interest Group) to help create a standard for HDR gaming. One of Sony's recent PS4 updates added support for that and some of LG's TVs got a firmware updated that added a HGIG option in the picture settings.

Question for you John my current TV, the Sony 43XBR800D only has two HDR compatible HDMI ports (HDMI 2 and HDMI 3) if I added a switch that does HDR too will that hinder the image? I most likely won't get it because i do plan on getting a larger TV late next year one that has a better peak brightness than my current set as well as more gamer friendly options and I want to added a dedicated 4K BD player too. While the Xbox One X is a fairly decent player I'm sure adding a upper tier player will make movies look even better.

Ah if that's the case then I'll probably just stick with the Xbox line then. I plan on getting the newest Xbox next holiday and I haven't had any complaints with the Xbox One X as a 4K UHD player. They tend to do a good job watching discs.

Well I've decided on my next TV and I may be getting it sooner than I thought. I'm going to get the LG C9 OLED TV it recently got a very gamer friendly firmware update so it should pair nicely for movies and video games. Plus the price is in my budget. It doesn't get as bright as I'd like but still gets fairly bright (over 800 nits) so it'll be an upgrade over my current TV.
