KING KONG VS. GODZILLA and KING KONG ESCAPES on BD April 1

Just watched King Kong vs. Godzilla. Some scenes are in better condition than others, but picture quality is largely fantastic. This movie looks great!

Picture quality on KKE is even better. Movie looks great. I never noticed the slightly serrated edges on the font for the credits (perhaps to give the impression of hairiness?).

Got my bluray of KKvsG today and I must say, Universal did a fantastic job with this disc. The picture quality is astounding......it just blows away their previous DVD release in every way. It almost looked to me like the film was just shot yesterday. Anyways, they did a great job IMO and my dvd is now officially up for sale.

I swear, I must be the only one who's noticed that there's much less dirt and scratches on KKvsG than the DVD... I remember GaryT posting that Universal had made a new preservation negative from the beat-up interpositive that makes up the Universal version of this film. Maybe that new wetgate negative was the source for this transfer? And another thing... while darker overall, the color on this Blu is somewhat better than the DVD. The image on the DVD was rather purplish in any shadows or dark areas, perhaps due to fading of the afore mentioned materials. The Blu improves on this, though there's still a little tinge of purple in everyone's hair!

Mine arrived today!

Haven't had a chance to watch them yet, but I do have one teeny tiny nitpick. The dvd's have some beautiful disc art, these blurays are extremely barebones in that respect.

The purple tinge is in the shadows/black areas of all the Japanese footage on the DVD (i.e. people's hair, gray rock walls, etc); it's not noticeable in the US-shot footage or stock footage added. Check out the comparison pic in the Blu-ray.com thread of the shot of Atami castle with the puppets in the background, that's another noticeable one. Also, when Kong first encounters Godzilla, the green of the trees stands out more in the Blu-ray.

Watched both of these today. Picture quality is fantastic. The funny thing about that is that the stock footage of the rotating satellite from Mysterians in KKvG seems to stick out a little more now because of that.

Going to pass the dvds along to a friend of mine who receives all my kaiju movie hand-me-downs. No more need for them.

Just picked up the fabulous KING KONG ESCAPES on Blu. I thought it looked good on DVD, but man, it REALLY looks good now. If the American versions of all of the Showa Godzilla films were on Blu in this kind of quality, I'd be in Kaiju heaven. I never ever thought I'd be able to own this unjustly obscure monster mash in such a pristine transfer. KKE is on my top ten Kaiju list.

I don't think it has been mentioned so far:

I received both Blu-Rays today and both work perfectly on my Region B Blu-Ray player, so I think we can say the discs are REGION-FREE.

Decided to put my tax return to use and bought these blu rays. I'm a little sore though because I just bought the DVDs last summer. I hate it when that happens but thats the nature of the beast. Now if Classic Media re-releases their collection on blu ray then I am going to be pissed as that will be the 3rd time I've bought their set

I'm bout ready to check my DVD of this....

I'm noticing the picture is jumpy or something...it's like it's shifting slightly back and forth the whole time. It's really irritating and kinda hard to watch....or maybe I'm just noticing this now for the first time or something?

at first I thought it was my projector, but a quick view of the menu blew that away.

Also, just checked the DVD. THat doesn't exhibit this issue. Wow...this blows. This blu ray is jacked up.

Quick check on KKE and it does not have this issue.

hm...I'll have to get with some peeps at some point to ask what their UPCs and stuff are like...maybe I got a bad disc or something?

I mean, it's pretty brutal. The opening credits are like watching a movie while shaking with rage, or bearing down to try to squeeze out a particularly stubborn poop.

On a side note my store started selling KKvsG DVD sadly I didn't notice a BD for it.

I just got my disc today and the one thing I've noticed on the KK vs G blu-ray is that it appears really grainy in the opening. Has it always been this grainy?

I definitely noticed substantial gate-weave throughout the opening credits, and the early scenes in the film, as compared to the DVD, but it seems to clear up after that.

Here is my recording of the opening with a DSLR and tripod for stability. I see what Jelly is seeing but I don't think its enough to bother me because the rest of the film is stable. What does bug me though is the excessive amount of grain. Look specifically at the UN building at 1:38 in.

I don't know how anybody could have NOT seen that. The credits are shimmying back and forth like nobody's business. It's flat-out better on the DVD. Pretty sad when the DVD does something better than the blu-ray. I officially do not like this release.

KKE is amaze-balls. KKvG is not good. If I'd known it was gonna be this insanely mediocre I would have completely avoided it.
