Monster Zero x SciFi Japan - Archive Only

The remake of the 1974 epoch-making series — which put the name "anime" into our cultural lexicon and launched the "Anime Boom" of the '80s — directed by Yutaka Izubuchi, has premiered in Japan this past weekend to packed houses. The producers are following the same marketing strategy that made GUNDAM UNICORN a success: Theatrical releases, followed by DVD/BD releases, and then television broadcast. The first two episodes of the new series, "The Long Voyage" opened in Japan this past Saturday, and the while you can buy the theater-exclusive early-bird BD & DVDs, the general release will not be until May 25th. I grew up with Star Blazers when it aired in the 80's, and this updated version looks amazing!

The second feature film, comprised of Episodes 3-6, of SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO: 2199 (Chapter 2: "Desperate Struggle in the Heliosphere") will be opening in ten select theaters across Japan on June 30th. The Japanese Blu-ray (which boasts English Subtitles) and DVD (which does not have English Subs) go on sale to the mass market on July 27th. You can pre-order !

Currently, the online Bandai Channel in Japan is running 9 minutes of the first part of this feature (from Episode 3), and you can see it here (and also, listen to the new ending theme song, "For Those Who Know the Beautiful Earth", by Aki Misato!

so is this the one that can never be dubed?

No. That would be the live action movie; that cannot be dubbed because of it's star, (aka "Kimutaku")'s contract which will not allow any of his performances to be dubbed by another actor. While not released in the US, the film is available on DVD and BD from Australia with English Subtitles (you can also see a trailer, here):

This animated remake of the original 1974 series is entirely something else, and the Japanese BDs contain English Subtitles. If it is licensed for the US, you can be sure that it will be available Subbed and Dubbed. But, I have no reason to wait that long (the series finishes in Japan in the Spring of 2013), so I'm snagging the BDs now.
