I don't know if anybody realized. But on Feburary 12th Tartan Video released Higuchi's "The Sinking of Japan" under the retitled "Doomsday: The Sinking of Japan", or so it is believed....
I say that because since it's supposed release I have had absolutely zero luck tracking this film down. I figured the chain stores wouldn't carry them but I looked anyway as usually stores such as Boarders carry a nice assortment of foreign films, but no luck. That brought my search online....after looking at every large internet retailer such as Amazon and Deep Discount and so on, I soon discovered that every online source either didn't even have the title listed at all (such as DD) or had it under a "not available" status. This bought my search to eBay where we all know pretty much anything can be found yet not a single trace of the movie can be found aside from the usual $4.99 bootlegs. Even rental sites such as Netflix and Blockbuster (both online and in-store) list the movie, but both companies have it under "not available" or "coming soon". My last stop before giving up was to check the torrent sites, not to download the film but rather to see if it has been ripped at all. Of course if it has been ripped for download then it surely must have been released somewhere....but you guessed it, nothing but the Japanese R2 rip could be found there.
So this brings me here, anybody happen to know what ever happened to this movie getting released? Because I have more or less come to the conclusion that they have delayed it's release but why and for how long is what I would really like to know. Also my usual media contacts are just as baffled as I am, which is really bizarre. If my schedule allows, I may try to call Tartan to get to the bottom of this but any word would be great.
