I was wondering what the Japanese re-issues of the Gamera trilogy are like? I remember when the Z-PLAN set was released, they were being re-mastered from an HD source and included DTS tracks. I'm assuming these individual re-issues are the same discs?
I have the ones that came with THE BOX 1995-1999 set - which are already light years ahead of the ADV releases - so I'm wondering how much of an improvement these new discs are it terms of video/audio?

The HD formats have been moving there about as slowly as everywhere else. Most have been the same western titles we've had here. There have been a number of Japanese domestic releases, but few that would qualify as "genre" titles. I just saw the other day that a bunch of GHOST IN THE SHELL SAC titles were coming out on BD in July, and that's one of the first high profile anime titles I've seen slated at all.
Still, at $257 for the 4 disc BD release of "The Laughing Man," "Individual Eleven," "Solid State Society" and some extras, I ain't biting -- and there's very little in the way of GitS I turn my nose up at. I see $100 BD Godzilla discs in our future...

Not to mention a lot of Japanese film companies are waiting for the format war to officially end, and see what the adoption rate of the winner is like.
