A different (and better) English Dub for Son of Godzilla!

Since I was going through my now-obsolete Godzilla VHSs & DVDs thanks to the new CM Godzilla Box, I came upon my VHS copy of 'Son Of Godzilla'. I brought up a question I've been meaning to ask.

The version I have has a different English dub from the Tristar/Classic Media one, and it's a lot better (in my opinion).

Here are some scans of my copy:

So G-Fans, what info can you give me on this?

Ah, I remember those tapes. I always wondered why the late 60's Godzilla was on the cover for "Godzilla 1985."
Anyway, I believe the Tri-star DVD has the (inferior) international dub. I could be wrong though.

That's the dub that Titra did for the US release. The dub on the Sony DVD is the bland international dub that was done in Hong Kong. Titra also did the dubs for the US versions of Mothra vs. Godzilla, Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster, Destroy All Monsters, Godzilla vs. Hedorah, and the Ultraman TV series (among other things, I'm sure). The Hong Kong team that did the international dub for Son of Godzilla also did the international dubs for Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster and Destroy All Monsters, which can be heard on the Sony and ADV DVDs, respectively.

It is interesting that your Anchor Bay box set has Son of Godzilla included in it and featured on the box art. I have the box set myself but mine had Godzilla vs. Megalon included instead. I bought Son of Godzilla separately.

Here's another Son of Godzilla VHS with the Titra dub:

Also, someone on Tokyo Monsters posted pics a while ago of an Anchor Bay Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster VHS with matching box art as these other releases. Apparently it was included in another version of that box set in place of Ghidorah The Three-Headed Monster. Here's what they posted:

Here's a VHS of Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster released by Goodtimes which featured the Titra dub:

Hope the back of the box doesn't spoil the movie for anybody:

This was the reason why the Sony DVDs of "Son" and "Sea Monster" didn't render my VHS copies obsolete. While the Sony DVDs had superb picture (better, even, than the Classic Media DVDs, I think), the old AIP dubs are far superior to the internationals (anytime, anywhere, hands down, though I've grown quite fond of the Hong Kong dub of DAM). It's not an issue when you opt to go the Japanese with subtitles route, but it's nice to go back to the AIP dubs for old time sake.

I have that Goodtimes VHS of Sea Monster, as well. Back in high school, my inquisitive best friend read the back of the box, and said, "that's it?!

Ah, I have several of those tapes (love how Goodtimes completely spoils the movie, as they did with their "Cosmic Monster" release).

To it's credit, while the Son of Godzilla and Sea Monster DVDs lack the great dubs, they do have beautiful picture and the restored opening scenes that were cut out of the US versions (as well as the original Japanese audio of course).

The original U.S. versions of these two even made their way overseas. I've seen some misleading movie boxart in my life, but these Greek releases have to be the most retarded covers I have ever seen. One cover features artwork stolen from an old UK VHS release!

As far as I'm concerned, there hasn't been decent boxart for a kaiju film since Orion's release of GODZILLA VS THE SMOG MONSTER back in 1989. The Simitar, Anchor Bay and Classic Media '02 releases, although uniform, leave nothing to the imagination.

Zina Saunders, the illustrator who drew the covers to the Goodtimes SM and CM releases, is the daughter of prolific artist Norman Saunders who worked on the original Mars Attacks trading card set.

Never missed 'em.

I have these same exact tapes in my collection (I bought 'em when they first came out, obsessed Godzilla collector that I was, even at 12)! In great condition, no less.
