The only way I'd ever get either one would be if they were free. I won't be wasting one penny on either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. Regular DVD has suited me perfectly since I first got into the format, and that hasn't changed a bit for me in the years since then. Why change now? I'll pass.

Glow-nut, you bring up an interesting point. however, I've read a post on avsforum.com where someone talks about personal experience with that same issue. He had a nice upconverting dvd player & wasn't impressed b/c he couldn't see much difference between it & the regular dvd player it had replaced. However, when he got an HD dvd player, he was amazed at how much it improved the PQ of standard dvds. He claimed that the upconversion done by the HD dvd player actually made a big difference in the quality of standard dvds even compared to a nice upconverting sd player.

Now, i take all this with a grain of salt b/c i'm not even convinced upconverting players are worth it (on fixed pixel displays such as plasma & LCD that is) as you're assuming the player has a better video processor than your tv. But if you have a really nice tv, you should already have a really nice video scaler built in. So, if you have a Vizio or something, an upconverting player might be worth it. But if you have a Panasonic, Samsung, pr something, you might not need it. But there's so many people on either side of the upconverting issue, & both sides have good arguments, that i still can't decide whether it's worth getting a new player just to see if it looks better. (the cheapo player i have looks great already, imo)

As for HD vs Bluray, i'm a wait & see kind of guy. hi def content is definately awesome (& worth a small premium for now i'd say, but not too much), but i'm not interested in having a nice expensive paper weight. I'll see who wins (please let there be a winner!). I'm not really partial to one over the other either as they both have pros & cons.

I'm surprised at how many people aren't going to support an HD format. I myself have both though I haven't expierenced Blu-Ray yet (I currently have my PS3 hooked up to an SDTV set and no Blu-Rays to play on it) I am impressed with HD-DVD even on my crappy 51" Toshiba that's about 5 years old.

The only reason I got the HD-DVD player is because it was the 360 add-on and it's down to $180 right now though I should have waited because now they're giving away some really good HD-DVDs if you buy the player :(.

The ones I can/could have gotten are really crappy, I guess I can't complain to much I DID get PJ's King Kong.

All I can say is bring on some kaiju films to the HD era though I doubt we'll be seeing that anytime soon. Zilla doesn't count. :P

I own a PS3, thus a Blu-Ray player and at first I wasn't that impressed. I was using component cables and BR movies looked fairly decent, but not amazing on my TV. Then I ugraded to DVI and noticed a much larger difference. Casino Royal in HD looks pretty damn great.

As for the format war... I hate it. I hate this exclusive crap. If I had to pick one i'd say Blu-Ray since it can hold more which can be huge for TV shows, but I still wish there was just a universal HDBR format. I will probably get the universal player in a few years when it goes down in price. Until then I can live without the exclusive titles that aren't Blu-Ray. Plus DVD will still be around for a few years, but with the big boom in HD-TV's, HD movies are a logical advancement.

Another reason to wait... no Godzilla movies yet!
