ITS ALIVE!
I have resurrected this thread. A local video store is going out of business. The DVD section is already pretty much wiped out but the VHS section is practically untouched. And going for $2 each, I've been getting some awesome stuff, a lot of which hasn't been released on DVD. So far, I've gotten the following tapes:
-Piranha II: The Spawning (James Cameron's cut)- This is the cut that James Cameron did himself when he broke into the editing room after being barred from post production. He then made a deal with the manufacturer to release this version of the film on VHS and Laserdisc. VERY hard to find and never released on DVD (and probably never will be).
-Necronomicon- Also never released on DVD) Lovecraft anthology with Jeffery Combs as Lovecraft- Stories are directed by Brian Yuzna, Christophe Gans and our beloved Shusuke Kaneko.
-Return of the Living Dead 3- This unrated cut has never been on US DVD.
-Deadly Blessing- Early Wes Craven movie that's never been on DVD.
-The Offspring (80s horror anthology hosted by Vincent Price)
-Food of the Gods Part 2
-The Willies
-Halloween III: Season of the Witch- Obviously this is on DVD, but I hadn't seen it in awhile and don't care enough about it to have the DVD, so I decided to pick it up.
-A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors- See Halloween III description.
I'll be making a few more trips before they close.
And looking through the shelves, I just noticed how FANTASTIC so much of that old VHS art was. They REALLY tried to sell the films on those covers. These days, they just photoshop a bunch of images together. At this store, I saw old tapes for the Mysterians and Son of Godzilla, and the artwork is gorgeous on those tapes. Why don't they do art like that for DVD/Blu-Ray releases? They could at least re-use the VHS art. Its really sad if you ask me.
