My first R2 DVD, MOTHRA (1961) (Some screenshots too)
I've always wanted to purchase a Toho DVD ever since the day I hacked my player to be multi-region. Just about a month ago, I purchased MOTHRA on DVD because it was a movie that as kid I liked a lot and the fact Columbia isn't going to release it on R1 anytime soon (hopefully it will, though). So, I ordered from YesAsia and it came within less than a week. Now for the DVD itself. The video quality is excellent, not suprising for Toho but I have issues with colorization. Maybe I'm spoiled by the R1 DVDs, but the coloring and contract seem to be a bit dark. No, not in a literal sense but MOTHRA is suppose to be a very colorful movie and the DVD didn't give me that impression. But again, that doesn't take away how good the video. It's presented in its original theaterical aspect ratio and the print f*cken great! The audio is a mixed bag. The 4.0 track is strong when it comes to effects, but I find the music to be drowned out a bit. The original 1.0 track has the music much louder and clearer. It's still good nevertheless and very high quality. The audio commentary, I cannot comment. The extras are a trailer and edited 62 minute version of the movie (very useless). It's a good release but could've done better in the extras department (like many other Toho DVDs) even if no behind-the-scenes footage exists. I'd say its a solid release, but could be better for such a fine classic. I took some screenshots just for people to see: They are Mothra's rampage on ''New York, America''. They're in thumbnails because they take up so much board space and I have no idea to make them smaller or remove the bars.
