Destroy All Monsters DVD...

Postby The Top Crusader » Fri Jun 23, 2006 5:46 pm

I'm sure someone would have said something if they knew anything, but, I'm curious I guess mostly about speculation... anyone think (or better yet, have some cold, hard facts!) that ADV is ever going to release a better version of this film, with some ASTOUNDING special features like a MENU or something? If not, any idea when ADV's contract is up and if any other company might pick it up?

Nope. ADV's not doing a Destroy All Monsters dvd, and if they do another, it won't be for some time, seeing that a so-called "special edition" was released in 2004. It was the same as the first release, in it's non-anamorphic, blurry, barebones rainbow-filled glory, only this time it has the soundtrack on the second disk. Still not really worth buying the exact same crappy thing with a soundtrack slapped on as a "special feature."

Before everyone starts saying "GET the MADMAN DISC I'TS COLL!!!!!!!!!!1111 <==3", I'll just say this. There's a Region 2 and a Region 4 disk. The region 2 has some 8mm things, a trailer, 5.1 audio track and an interactive storybook. No subtitles. The region 4 has the trailer, the 5.1 audio track and the terrible International dub. Subtitles are included. There's also a hord of bootlegs sourced form various different sources, mostly videos and the R2. Since my opinions usually suck, you choose which one.

What really sucks is the fact ADV is a good company, they've put out a lot of quality DVDs, but for some reason this one turned out bad. And they never fixed it on the re-release. They redid the Daimajin films, but for some reason not DAM...

I know someone involved with ADV, I asked her to try to encourage them to re-release it on a better DVD.

If I had a region free player I might consider getting the R2 or R4 version of this because it is my favorite Godzilla movie.. For now though, I'm stuck with the one chapter ADV version.

Correct me if I'm wrong and my memory is playing tricks on me, but wasn't it Toho who forced ADV to release their version of DAM without any frills in order to assure it wouldn't be competition to their R2 release?

I own the Special Edition ADV release of DAM, but it was because I was able to get it for around $5 and I wanted the soundtrack.
I hate the current release, and I wish ADV would give it a real DVD release.

Where'd you get the Special Edition at that price. All I have is the VHS and I'd like to replace it [even though the DVD likely isn't a better quality picture] - I don't want to spend to much on a half-baked DVD.

After reading this topic, I've realized something: my VHS copy of DAM (which has the AIP dub!) is about 10 years old now. I was just going to let it sit and buy the ADV DVD, but I've been holding off because I know it has the International version (which is just plain BAD compared to the AIP version). But... maybe I should just convert my VHS copy to DVD, that way I can preserve the dub, and later on, after I get around to buying the ADV DVD, I can try marrying the AIP dub with ADV's video (which I assume is better quality than my VHS)...
