DVD Problems

I doubt the problem is the player's age, I bought my parents a Toshiba SD-1200 several years ago [4-6 years] and it's still working fine.

I take it the problem happens on all the discs you try?

Perhaps it's because there is some defective part that has just recently decided to go out on you.

Does the troubleshooting section of the owner's manual offer any useful suggestions? I would've checked at Toshiba's site but their owner's manual section is down.

This is perhaps a misaligned laser. In general, if something like this happens to your player, use the lens cleaner once or, maybe, twice. After this, if it does not work again for a long time (a year or so), it's safe to say it's something else.
