It's clear that Sony are releasing these upcoming discs to cash in on the hype surrounding the new Godzilla movie, but I'm still hopeful about the potential quality. Every Godzilla DVD Sony put out in 2004 was done to capitalize on the 50th anniversary and those still ended up being a landmark for us North American fans, the very first time that any Godzilla movies were given dual Japanese/English-language presentations on home video in North America. We got fantastic audio/video quality for five Showa titles and mostly good A/V quality for the Millennium films.

The one major downside was that many of those DVDs had dubtitles, and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II still featured a truncated cut with video-generated titles and the end credits replaced with copyright information rather than Toho's international English cut. I really hope Sony doesn't repeat that with their Heisei titles this go-around. I'm cautiously optimistic.

I remember reading years ago that Sony got their subtitle scripts from Toho. If that's the case, I'm afraid we may just get repeats of all of the same subtitles and dubtitles as before, sadly. I can't really see Sony going out of their way to commission new translations within the next two months.

I'm hoping, though, that all of these upcoming releases will be dual-language and feature the uncut international English prints. For the Heisei movies, that would be a major improvement from what we got before.

Ben's post above isn't the first time I'd heard that they got the subtitle scripts from Toho, so I honestly don't know for sure. That's kinda what my post was trying to get to the bottom of.
