I'm actually going to agree with Kain on this one, I think the alternate titles are there for the benefit of very casual fans who may want to see Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster and have no idea that it's also called Godzilla vs. Hedorah. I understand the false advertising claim, but I think that's minor considering the number of fans that will actually make that complaint.

I guess I just have a better memory than most here. All I know is if I were a "causal" fan wanting to rediscover my childhood, and I picked up a dvd/brd that had prominantly featured "Godzilla vs the Smog Monster", and what I actually got was the international dub - Godzilla vs Hedorah I'd be pissed as hell. It would be the Sandy Frank Gamera films on VHS all over again. Back in the late 80's obviosuly I didn't have access to nearly the resources I have now. But despite not seeing any Gamera movie on TV for nearly a decade, when I first saw those cheap titles & heard the voices, I knew there was something wrong. Sure I know it probably wont change anything overall, but I think to make the blanket statement that anyone who hasn't seen these films in 30 years wont remember anyway, so its of little consequence, is a little naive. The only reason I tolerated the Sony DVD's is for the original japanese language versions subtitled. But any time I want to watch the film dubbed, I always use my DVR backups, NEVER the Toho versions, with the exception of the films from 1972 and forward for obvious reasons.
There are no more good TV Shows, only ones that haven't disappointed me yet.

^Give me the old original English dubs that I grew up with and call it the day. Anything else would be uncivilized.

While I don't really care myself, I can sort of see the claims of "false advertising". The covers to these discs are sort of riffing on Classic Media's designs. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but Classic Media's movies accurately titled both the Japanese and English versions. Fans knew what they were getting out of that from the Japanese title at the top and English title at the bottom. In some cases there was a "belt" included around the case to detail the specs.

Kraken Releasing's discs are closer to the way Sony released these movies: With international dubs and Japanese versions. There was no need to call Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster, Godzilla vs. Gigan or Godzilla vs. Hedorah anything else. But with something that looks close to Classic Media's covers (the small Japanese poster framed in the middle, the two titles at the top and bottom, the varied text between the two titles) it could be a little misleading. Which might be the point.

On the other hand I don't think a lot of fans think that hard about it. From what I can tell, people who want the original dubs they grew up with are few and far between. It's not a deal breaker if the movie doesn't include a specific dub. More people will refuse to buy it if the Japanese version isn't included-- like myself.

On another note, has it been confirmed these discs will be barebones? After the Media Blasters thing, I fear special features on Godzilla films in North America will be a thing of the past.

The only extras confirmed are trailers. I doubt we'll be getting anything else. It seems like Toho isn't working with American distributors in terms of extras, and it seems like Kraken is trying to play it safe with these releases.

Sorry for not clearing that up. The SFJ article says the Japanese trailers will be included, so I assume they'll be the trailers for these films.

So, are these new releases going to have the original Japanese titles and be presented exactly as they were in Japan or have English titles? I heard that the original word balloons were going to be included on Gigan, so it'd be nice to be completely original.

All I know is that Section 23 would be insane not to put "Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster" somewhere on the cover of that release. No one knows what the hell "Ebirah: Horror of the Deep" is.

The same can be said of the other titles, but to a lesser extent. They want the casual buyers to connect the titles of the movies they remember as kids to the Toho-mandated titles of today.
