It really is weird that Criterion would put the 2002 Godzilla from Godzilla x Mechagodzilla on the packaging for Godzilla (1954). Remember when Mill Creek's first Gamera 3 cover had an image of the 1995 Guardian of the Universe suit? Remember when ADV released Destroy All Monsters with art that depicted Godzilla, Rodan and King Ghidorah as their Heisei incarnations? Design choices like that don't make or break a release, but they don't make sense.
Toho wouldn't let Media Blasters use the Champion Matsuri Festival poster for the Destroy All Monsters cover, but somehow they didn't take issue with an anachronism like this? Then again, they provided Media Blasters with art for Ghidorah the Three-Headed Monster to use as a temp image for DAM, so I guess this makes sense.
I'm still very excited about what's sure to be one of the all-time best stateside Godzilla DVD releases.
