It's a shame that Toho Kingdom, being full of the type of fans that it is, happens to be the facet of the Godzilla fandom that is public.

As for the Blu-Ray, those pics look great. I didn't get a chance to read the full review yet, but will soon. I was a little taken aback by the first image of Godzilla coming through the power lines; it is very weathered-looking, but I quickly realized that the SFX shots are going to look more rough than the drama footage. And I totally respect preserving the film rather than trying to spit polish it into something abominable like the Predator Blu-Ray.

Which has pretty much taught me to research any Blu-Ray I may buy so I don't end up getting something that's the antithesis to hi-def. But Godzilla '54... it very well may be my first Blu-Ray purchase (how appropriate... Godzilla 2000 was my first DVD. :) )

The ADV Gamera films were my first dvds and my first blu ray was An American Werewolf in London 8-)

But I do think this will be an excellent release to dip your toe into the blu ray pool

Yeah, smoothing out everything so there is no grain worsens detail. It doesn't improve it at all. I want to see the film grain. It's supposed to be there. The Predator Blu-Ray basically smudged everything into a smeary painting and labels it as "hi-def." It's a sham.

So your telling me this looks like crap? Every blu ray of older movies has a few scenes that look eh. I personally hate grain so when grain is involved in a blu ray I'm not to pleased. To each their own.

I don't see what the big deal is, the Toho Blu-Ray is like, totally up to standard and stuff:

RapZilla, the film was never supposed to look like that. Grain is part of the image. You don't like grain? Oh well. It's part of a lot of films. Sure, the image is sharp, but everyone looks like they're covered in vasoline. This is a problem. That kind of image enhancement leads to a loss in picture quality.

Maybe you should consider reading the quibbles people have with the disk elsewhere, because I'm not gong to take the time to spell it out for you. No offense.

Is it safe to say you won't enjoy Critereon's GODZILLA release for this reason alone? :?
