So I finally got around to watching my GvsMegalon bluray last night and I noticed a couple of issues. First, I will start out and say that the picture quality IS better than the DVD. But it's not a huge difference. The most noticeable thing is the bluray handles the films grain structure much better than the DVD. That and it is noticeably sharper and more detailed. Bent unless you're comparing them side by side or just a totally anal A/V snob (like me), most people probably won't notice a big enough difference to care much.
Now on to the issues:
1. I noticed that in MANY of the cuts, you can see the top of another film frame at the bottom of the image. It's like the frames weren't lined up properly in the scanner. Each time this happens it's just a very quick flash for one frame so it's gone quickly. Buy it happens A LOT. Seriously.
This frame alignment issue at the cuts seems to be inherent in the transfer because it is present on both the DVD and blu ray.
2. What I consider a much more annoying issue is ONLY present on the blu ray. Because of that, I can only assume it's some sort of encoding error. It looks VERY much like the issue on the Ultra Q discs where there is some significant image ghosting. It almost looks like an interlacing error where the fields are out of sync, but it's not interlaced. Fortunately on Megalon it's not nearly as bad as on Ultra Q. It's really only visible when things are moving quite rapidly. But it makes for some odd, headache inducing strobe effect during the fight when there's a lot of very rapid cuts between different close ups of the monsters beating on each other.
Anyone else notice this issue?
