New DVD/Blu-ray Purchases

Since my gal is going to laid up from her surgery for a bit I got her an early Christmas/welcome home/recovery gift.



She loves Simon Pegg and while she has the other two on DVD, I know she would eventually want them on high def.

The mailbox and the bargain bin at Best Buy yielded some movies yesterday:

Diamonds Are Forever (DVD)
Jiro Dreams of Sushi (Blu-ray)

How's the quality of the Sinbad BDs? I have them on DVD already so is it worth the upgrade?

^They're about the same quality as the Argonauts Blu-Ray: crystal clear most of the time, but a bit grainier during the FX scenes because of the all the optical stuff that was done - and the odd somewhat botched optical or stock-shot that's very grainy (those are all inherent to the movie itself, naturally). They're certainly a step-up from the DVDs.

I was really interested in the Sinbad Blu-Rays until I learned that neither film has its original mono mix, only a 5.1 surround mix. Now I'm torn. I hate that there's no option to listen to the original sound mix (and I don't have a surround sound setup), but I'm sure this will be the only Hi-Def release of either movie for years to come.

Fry's has the Masters of Horror first season for a grand total of $5 ($2 for volume one, and $1 for each of the next three volumes). I already had it (and I got RIPPED OFF at a total of $9!!! ) but I bought it as stocking stuffers for my old man and my brother-in-law.
