Destroy All Planets.....2010??

Postby Flame of Udin » Wed Jun 23, 2010 10:42 pm

Destroy All Planets 2010

Brand new digital transfer?

Exclusive commentary track from Carl Craig?

I know Shout! is releasing the real deal on a double feature disc () in September, but Retromedia is really trying to one up them it seems!

If only they ever learned that their covers always look terrible, and adding 2010 to the title? Seriously?

Actually, Flame of Udin, we do -- by checking out the registration at the Library of Congress -- it's not alchemy, because we can look up the information for ourselves:

Dubious Comforts on the Classic Horror Film Board wrote: ...there exists a copyright registration to Destroy All Planets which precedes Retromedia's and Alpha's 2003 claims ("new soundtrack material" and "DVD box cover" respectively) by more than 10 years. Just look up document V2840P133 on the Library of Congress web site. The catalog only includes registrations from 1978 and onward, so there may be additional records prior to 1978.

He continues in a subsequent post:

Copyright records, as well as a proper notice on the film's title sequence, show that the work is not public domain. The Library of Congress has guidelines pertaining to duration: http://www.bitlaw.com/copyright/duration.html

Deff gotta side against this release...and since we are getting an actual release sanctioned by the studio I can't see the reason to support this...this isn't like the original BCI Ultraman release when it was a slightly sady situation but it was likely to be the only Ultraman release we'd ever see over here...

I'm not going to buy two versions of the same film, so I'm inclined to buy the DVD that is double-featured with my favorite Gamera film.

Sorry, my bad... I wrote:

"The rule stands but, right or wrong, I don't think the term bootleg applies here."

I meant:

"The rule stands but, right or wrong, I don't think the bootleg rule applies here."

Again, I'm not passing judgment. Call it a bootleg or a crappy DVD, I really don't care. I'm simply saying that the MZ rule forbidding discussions of bootlegs does not apply here -- and as outlined above -- this appears to fall into a grey area.

No thanks. First, I have no idea who Carl Craig is, so commentary means nothing to me. Secondly, I'll wait for Shout to release this movie properly.
