Your choice for a Criterion Release...

Postby william newell » Wed Dec 06, 2006 4:15 pm

I was just thinking, if you could pick one movie from the Godzilla series for the Criterion treatment, which would it be? Personaly, I would go with GMK. While the Sony disc is nice, the innaccurate subtitles and lack of oomph on the soundtrack(which is suprising on a Sony release)have made this the only Godzilla DVD that I can say I was truly disappointed with. Plus with their ability to add just about every extra imaginable, and their beautiful transfers, I'd love to see them do GMK. Of course I know the likelyhood of this happening is nil, I still thought it would make an interesting topic to discuss. So what do you think folks, which title gets your vote?

I have a pretty long list myself but to sum it up, it would all of the Godzilla films that are considered generally to be the best.

The list includes

Godzilla
Godzilla vs Mothra
GMK

Even though I am a fan of the Heisei series, I didn't put them on the list since it would be somewhat an iffy choice.

King Kong vs. Godzilla (only if it includes the Japanese version)
Monster Zero
Destroy All Monsters

Also:

The Three Treasures
Rodan
Mothra
War of the Gargantuas

I would have put Gojira and Mothra vs. Godzilla on the list, but I think CM did a fine job and gave us some great extras to boot.

Struggling between GMK and Monster Zero. I guess the latter, since it above all will outlive mankind. :D

SpaceGodzilla. Definitely.

(Had to do it before someone else did. Echoes on the other movies mentioned for a serious answer.)

I was thinking about the Showa films myself, Ghidorah in particular, but until I get a chance to see just what exactly Classic Media has planned, I went with GMK. Actually, I'm kind of suprised that no one has mentioned Godzilla '85 or Biollante seeing as neither has any possibility(that I know of)of a release anytime soon...OOPPS, sorry, I just noticed both G'85 and Biollante have been mentioned  .

^ I mentioned G'85 and Bio.

I think I'll have to take back me saying I want MZ. It's being released by CM, so I'll have to see what they do with that.....Ghidorah too.

The Showa titles Classic Media has done (and is doing) are probably as good as a Criterion release would be of the same titles. I can't imagine anything Criterion would do that CM hasn't ('cept Criterion would never let a cropped version get by, as in Godzilla vs. The Thing).

GMK would be great, I agree. Heck, just subtitle all the stuff on the 3-disc, R2 Toho set. I know I'd love to have good English subs for all the extras on the R2, 3-disc Final Wars.

I would saw my own arm off for a Criterion DVD set of Godzilla 1985/The Return of Godzilla. Well.... maybe not my arm, someone else's arm.

...and they'd follow up with a wonderful Godzilla vs. Biollante release a few months later.
