I got this on the release date and was planning to write about it then, but what with the holidays and work I just didn't have time.
Time of the Apes is as funny as I remember and as always makes me really really want to see the tv show 猿の軍団 (Saru no Gundan) that it is cobbled out of. An interview with August is the main extra on this DVD and he gives the origin of the tv show Saru no Gundan and the famous writer that wrote the show, and a comparison to children's program here in the States. Totally awesome stuff August!
Mighty Jack, what a great name for a movie or tv show and good lord the movie doesn't live up to the name as it is boring and even the MST3K guys don't have much to say during it (unless *gasp*they found it interesting enough to just watch and not joke about). August again has an interesting interview segment as an extra and he gives the background and some details of the show Mighty Jack and its second series Fight Mighty Jack. Another extra is a segment with the guys who create the menu vignettes for Shout Factory's MST3K DVD releases and it's good too.
For those that are wondering that perhaps the next MST3K DVDS set will contain Fugitive Alien and Fugitive Alien 2, wonder no more because it does not. Do not count out the possibility of a future release of these two MST3K send ups of these Sandy Franked Japanese in origin movies. Perhaps Shout is just taking a break from season three of MST3K or feel like they should give the Japanese centric shows a break?
MST3K's send up of Time of the Apes alone makes this DVD box set worth the price. August's interview for both Mighty Jack and Time of the Apes are great great bonuses. Haven't watched the other two offerings yet as I'm more of a Joel MST3Ker.
