When I first started travelling here I stayed at Juyoh Hotel: http://www.juyoh.co.jp/
Nothing spectacular, but for $30 a night it’s hard to beat. It had a bed, a shower and free wifi, which is all I really needed at 18 on my own in Tokyo.
I'd still recommend this place to anyone desperate to see Japan on a tight budget.
