Anyone knew about the recent extinction of the Chinese River Dolphin?

It really sucks, even if there's one or two alive somewere, the chance of survival of the species is 1 in a million. maybe we got a new cryptid on the lines of the Tylacine.

Sad, sad news  You know, I can look at drawings or pictures of animals that became extinct before I was born and while it bothers me that those animals are no longer with us, it really hits me HARD when I hear of an animal becoming extinct in MY lifetime. By no means am I a "tree-hugging hippie", a vegetarian or (worst of all!) a member of PETA, but I do care greatly about the natural environment and I am an animal lover through and through. Why must people pollute and overfish rivers, why must they cut down vast rainforests such as the Amazon and countless others worldwide? Why must people continue to kill endangered animals solely for their tusks or beautiful hides? Why must endangered animals become ENDANGERED? When will the world, as a whole, wake up and GIVE A "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" :?:

I heard about this, very sad news indeed. The really sad thing is that there are species going extinct all of the time, we just don't hear or know about them. I remember reading about the baiji as a child. It's so sad and strange knowing that it doesn't exist anymore.

I'm upset about this. There was a lenghty section in Douglas Adams' wonderful non-fiction book "Last Chance to See" about the Baji river dolphin. It's a really wonderful book. At the time of the book (about '88), their were about 100 dolphins left. I'm partly suprised it took this long for them to die off for good. The book made it seem like they had two to three years to live after the Chinese built a dam that would destroy their habitat.
