Discotek Media is releasing some great stuff!

I've always managed to check up on Discotek every few months. But since several companies have ceased to exist, or have really slowed down, Discotek seems to be really stepping it up a notch. They are releasing mostly older stuff, which I am really happy about, and some classic re-releases for some that may have missed out the first time. check out what they have coming. Especially if you are a fan of 90's & prior anime, like me, you wont be disappointed.

One thing I especially praise them for is, although they may be slow about some releases they don't 1 -falsely advertise release dates, and constantly push them back *cough*mediablasters*cough*, and 2. Their product, once released, is of good quality (again unlike that other company that seemingly has no quality control).

I am tempted by some of their Blu Ray releases, but unless it really saves shelf space in my collection, I usually refrain from repurchasing simply to upgrade.

Sweet nostalgia overload Batman!!! I remember watching SciFi channel edited versions of the Fatal Fury movies... Galaxy Express 999, Flame of Recca, Blue Submarine, so many VHS tapes..... I remember seeing theatrical releases of Jin Roh and Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust in DC...

They're great. A lot of modern anime cliches have alienated me, so I've been enjoying some older series instead. Man, I got my Captain Harlock set like a year ago and haven't watched it yet! Better get on it.

I really, really wish they'd release Future Boy Conan. That's my holy grail of anime releases.

Yeah it's cool they do all sorts of retro releases with some newer stuff in the mix.
For example I borrowed the DNAngel release the Eastern Star side of Discotek did.
It looked & sounded great.

Now if only they would get stuff like Karrin or Kamichu!

They're gonna start releasing the second Lupin series (the most famous one) next year!

I own a few older Pioneer anime DVDs, and pretty much ALL of them have the Lupin the 3rd trailer on them.
I really liked watching it on Toonami when it was on, though they seemed to skip the Hitler related episode...

Kinda wish they would go back and dub the rest of those episodes.
Pretty sure Tony Oliver wouldn't mind!

I am more intrigued by the capacity and format, than the series itself.

Is it really possible to get 52 episodes (running @ 22 minuets each) on a single BD, even if quality is only Standard DVD? - I mean I've seen some really cheap overseas dual layer DVD's that can fit up to 20 episodes on a single DVD, but you can tell the quality is pretty bad. Additionally they usually only have the series opening before the 1st episode, and ending after the last episode.

If this is true, and the quality is on par with Good DVD's (I mean no artifacting, pixilation, slow downs etc... etc..) Then I guess that is pretty cool. Though it would suck if this disc got scratched . Saving space is awesome, but I guess there is something to be said about not having all your episodes on one disc.

Looks like I answered my own question. I knew the standard, single layer DVD was 4.7G. But I had no idea a Blu Ray was 25G! --I Guess why more companies have not taken advantage of this is:

1.Money -Sell more discs with less content, make more $$
2. Quality -while it is nice to have so much content on one disc, more people buy Blu-Ray for HD quality, not to have more SD quality on less physical media.

Looking at all the anime series I have with an average of 5 episodes on 1 DVD, imagine the space I could save. But then I don't really have the money to invest in all those upgrades

Aren't there two types od Blu-rays? 25gbs and 50gbs on a dual layer?

Yep, each layer of a Blu-ray disc has a 25 GB capacity so a dual layer disc has 50 GB total. I think two layers is the limit -- I seem to recall that there may have been tests with triple layer and up for DVDs several years ago but there were problems with disc life and such.

The S!F 3 movie compilations (Gaiking, Danguard Ace & Starzinger) are still readily available on Amazon.

But yes I am definitely looking forward to the full series release of Gaiking. Discotek did an amazing job with Mazinger Z. I'm guessing this will be very late 2016...like end of December. But DT/ES always takes their time, and provides good product. (I would suggest Media Blasters hire some of their QC people, but I would not want Discotek to stop whatever good thing they have going) The only problem I ever had was several years ago with their War in Space dvd, (a widely known defect) which they replaced for free.

I saw news about GoShogun a few weeks back, I am super excited though no release date has been announced yet.

Dancouga coming in June!--I originally purchased these on VHS back in 2001 when (I think it was Renditions...or maybe another smaller company) was having a fire sale and got the VHS for $2.00 each, and thus the whole series for $16.00. The last volume has the Requim for Victims OVA, no word of that in Discoteks description, so I may have to hold onto my digital copies a little longer.

Psybuster- I purchased Geneons DVD's under the incorrect translation "Cybuster"...There's no need to double-dip on this, but it was so niche the first time, I'm sure many fans would love to have another chance to get it on DVD.

I saw that Discotek is releasing the Lupin anime series, which is cool. I've thought about checking it out for years, but never got around to it and Geneon not releasing the whole thing didn't help matters either.

They apparently picked up the Cyborg 009 series that aired on Cartoon Network.
Prior to that there were a few DVD volumes released, but besides the first volume, it was really hard to find the 2nd volume.
So I gave up, I might get that during the holidays (if it's out by then).

Greetings All,

I may be a bit out of touch since DM/ES switched to promoting most of their new releases on Facebook, however is it just me, or have things seemed to slow down? Maybe not just with this company, but with anime companies in general. I noticed a similiar slowdown a few years back, but things picked up again.

With that said, can anyone here recommend a reliable source for updates on physical media anime releases that are just on a standard website, and not tied to a social media platform?

Looking forward to Psycho Armor Govarian arriving at my home later this week!

I just check out their Twitter. I think they just announced a few titles. Nothing that really interested me. A City Hunter movie? Those Lupin releases seem to be coming out regularly, too.

I know that they have a lot of stuff in the works that hasn't been announced, but I think the slow down your thinking about was the result of a mess caused when they switched disc manufacturers last year which caused a lot of things to be very late, so instead of new titles everyone was waiting for titles that have been announced like a year earlier! It felt like forever to get Giant Robo!
