Probably a stupid question but...

...as a Godzilla and Gamera (etc.!) fan, would I enjoy Ultraman? I can get VCDs of the original series but have never bothered thinking about them until now. Is it as juvenile as Power Rangers?

It all depends. Do you like the older Godzilla and Gamera movies? Do you enjoy any part of Power Rangers? Is your mind open enough to giant superheroes?
The original Ultraman series is a classic, any person at any age can watch it without cringing (unlike PR, those first seasons were just not good, except for the fights and effects). Many people like the newer ones, Tiga, etc.
We need more info from you to make a real guess if you would like it.

Well, I liked the idea of Tiga just because it was on TV (Kaiju on American TV? No way!) Unfortunately, the dubbing not only sucked in its own right, but it totally screwed up the storyline, sometimes to make it more "kid frinedy" and PC, and sometimes for no reason at all :gross:

Darn, I miss the :gross:

More info!

Do I like Showa Godzilla and Gamera: yes.
Do I like Power Rangers: not the ones I´ve seen.
Am I open minded enough to accept giant superheroes: why not? I accept bioengineered giant turtles, huge subterranean insects and super-evolved effluent!

Well, if you can realize that, and don't think "Godzilla is worlds more important than Ultraman" (actual quote from a letter in G-Fan) then I'd say you would like some of the Ultra series. Perhaps not all, but most are fun.

@Legion_DK:

I'ld say, give it a try!

Just keep in mind that the different series vary in style and tone the same way the Godzilla films do. Some are more serious, some are comical, some are silly, some are scary, etc.

If you like the 1960s Toho films I would think the early Ultra shows would be right up your alley. The first two series, ULTRA Q and ULTRAMAN look like Toho mini-movies. Tsuburaya's effects and the use of several Toho monster suits just add to that effect.

Try this:

More ultra nonsense than you can shake a beta capsule at : )

I gave a tape of the first 4 episodes to my co-worker (Who remembers them FIRST RUN) and his kids though it was the bee’s knees. I agree. My co-worker was pretty psyched too…
Tell me about it. I'm still trying to get rid of my Ultraman Twords the Future VHS tapes (which are mostly unopened btw.)
What ones do you have?

I think that you would enjoy Ultraman. It has giant monsters, and the story about an alien who is trying to save the human race from these monsters make a very good story.
