Wow, Mill Creek's Ultraman DVD sucks in quality control!

It's already bad enough they have crammed 10 episodes onto each disc, but the quality control on Disc 3 is down right dreadful. Of the 4 episodes I have watched on that disc, two of them have had bad subtitles. In episode 22, the subtitles were coming up on screen a good 5-10 seconds before the dialog was even spoken, so sometimes 2-3 lines of dialog would go by before the subs even emerged. IN episode 24, the subs were showing up AFTER the lines of dialog were spoken. Oh yeah, and the video quality in a few episodes is atrocious as episode 24 had moments where the video was washed out and blury. Did no one at Mill Creek bother to check their discs before shipping them out? No wonder they sold this set for $6 at Walmart. I really hope someone rereleases this show soon and on BD.

Sounds shoddy, but not too surprising at that price. I was more disappointed by Shout's Ultraseven DVDs. The video quality issues on some episodes were beyond their control, but the biggest problem was how many episodes had mis-timed subtitles throughout. It's been a while since I watched them, but I'm sure it was about half the series.

If I remember correctly, the subs for the underwater and Telesdon episodes are off - one had them timed too early and one too late, like you mentioned. I just switched over to the English dub for those episodes.

The Telesdon episode is one of my favorite episodes, and I rather like the English dub (by the Speed Racer team!), though the audio quality for the dub is subpar because of Chaiyo.

^They're dealing with the materials that Chaiyo gave them. They're the root of the inferior quality.

They can't right now. According to law Chaiyo is the foreign rights holders to those first 6 shows, and will be until the courts say otherwise. They couldn't work with Tsuburaya if they wanted to for those series.

Now, everything after those first 6 shows is with Tsuburaya: Crunchyroll works directly with Tsuburaya, William Winckler is working directly with Tsuburaya, Toku is working directly with Tsuburaya.

I sprung for the two BCI/Eclipse sets when they were first released, and I'm generally happy with those. Its more about nostalgia, and watching the English dub for me. Does the MC set even have that? I bought the MC set for a friend as a gift (like you said, super cheap, I think I got mine at Frys for $5), because he was a more casual fan, but I never asked him if he enjoyed it, or what the quality was.

^They can't. Chaiyo has the rights for those shows in certain territories and Tsuburaya can't do anything about it. That's why the series streaming on Crunchyroll begin with Ultraman Leo.

So then how about they just work together for the benefit of the fanbase instead of being little babies about it?

Anyway, I finished the series today. That was an odd final batch of episodes, especially the repeated plots that were done. Oh, and honestly, that didn't feel like a final episode. I'm going to work on my review next week of it, so I'll hold off on really talking about it at this moment in time.

^Tsuburaya hates Chaiyo's guts, and they're a crooked bunch, so I understand the hate. I'd also understand if they gave them better elements for those six shows as that would better represent Tsuburaya's work abroad, but maybe they think that would just give them more legitimacy?

Isn't that Tsuburaya's own fault then? How is tha Chaiyo's responsibility?

Anyway, on to UltraSevenI Shout!'s DVD quality is definitely hit or miss. I watched the first four episodes and the video looks pretty good for the most part (although not as good as Bandai's REgion 2 DVDs I owned), but the audio is kind of annoying. Every time a character talks there is this hissing sound and sometimes the audio looks out of synch. Once again, I don't remember it being like this on the R2 DVD. The translations on the subs are also off a bit as a character will make a grunt sound but the subs will say, "As you say Captain!" or something like that. The timing is weird as there have been a couple of places where the subs went away before I could finish the line. It wasn't horrible, but three times in four episodes is way too many. What they really needed to do was spread out their sentences a little bit more.

Because without the fans these shows wouldn't exist in the first place. As such, companies should do what is right for the fans, not for their own personal selfish gain. Tsuburaya should be groveling at our feet because we are the only reason they have been in business for over 50 years.

Wait a minute, Ultraman is over 50 years now, so shouldn't Chaiyo's license on it have expired last year?
