Wow, this is amazing!
The show is very low budget, due to the oil strikes at the time, but the first sixteen episodes are great, pessimistic 70s action. The last dozen or so episodes are interesting too, as everyone Leo knows dies, and he basically becomes a vagrant living off the street while trying to take care of this child.
Is there anyway to download these? Would love to have the subtitles.

I was delighted to see
Mebius &
Max on Crunchyroll - but I've never seen
Ultraman Leo, so this has me downright PSYCHED.

I'm still recovering from the heart attack of seeing the price of the OOP third DVD volume of Tiga.

This is turning about to be a lot like Ace for me. Starts off as my favorite Ultra series and then becomes unwatchable halfway through. I hate that Tsuburaya always, always caved in to ratings pressure for every serious series after Seven.

I had the set at one point and sold all 4 volumes separately on ebay with $1 starting price... volume 3 sold for more than all 3 of volumes put together and some.

1,2, and 4 don't seem difficult to find. 3 must've been produced in lesser quantities, the aftermarket prices for it are insane. Don't think I'll be buying it short of finding it at a garage sale where someone doesn't know what it is or something.

Crunchyroll sounds really cool, I'll have to give their app a look. Sadly, my Sony BDP S3100 is slow to add new apps (in spite of advertising Cinema Now on the blasted box, they dropped it after a copyright disagreement, and they've basically told me "talk to the hand" as regards HBO Go), and the Chromecast I bought as a cheap solution is a piece of junk-no Amazon or remote, it's annoying. Ah, the streaming age.

I'm seven episodes in, and really enjoying it so far. I've only recently started getting into Ultraman, and I'm surprised that a franchise with such a clearly delineated formula sees such dramatic swings in tone between series. Leo is startling in its brutal violence, with the moment that two children see their father sliced in two being particularly shocking. Also, unlike the signature beam attacks favoured by some other Ultras, Leo's preferred method of finishing monsters so far seems to be dismembering them and then stabbing them to death with their own spiky appendages.
My favourite aspect is the master/pupil relationship between Dan and Gen, and all the sadistic training methods that Dan cooks up, so I'm sad to hear that this element disappears later on. Some of the monster designs are downright bonkers too, and I have to wonder how some of the script meetings went. Presumably something like:
Producer: Okay, what have we got this week?
Writer: A monster that looks like a green pineapple attaches a flower to its head and transforms the petals into deadly boomerangs. Dan trains Gen to counter this by throwing dozens of boomerangs at his face.
Producer: {SCRIPT APPROVED}

Despite my intial excitement about Crunchyroll streaming Ultraman Leo, I've been going very slowly through it. As glad as I am that it's legally available for us westerners to watch, I honestly don't think it's actually a very good show. The first quarter is decent, with a decidedly dark tone and some interesting character relationships, but the mentor/student relationship between Seven and Leo was actually somewhat uncomfortable to watch, what with how frustratingly rash Leo is and how startlingly abusive Seven could be. It was ridiculous in a bad, unfunny way.
That said, I suppose that was still better than the proceeding majority of the series which became totally silly and nonsensical. There are a few episodes & monsters here and there that I enjoyed (Satan Beetle might be my favorite monster in the series), but generally speaking, getting through episodes 16-39 (iirc) was a real chore.
I've entered the final 11 episodes now, and after the mother-of-all wham episodes that was episode 40, the show seems to be on a better track. Fight on, Leo!

Sweet, it looks like you can watch it without a subscription if you're willing to put up with the commercials! Wonder if it supports Chromecast? I'm still struggling with why on Earth Cinemax and Funimation don't

I believe most of Crunchyroll's shows, save brand-new episodes, are free to watch, albeit weith commercials.
I see I never came back to this thread. I finished Ultraman Leo several months ago, but even though it improved somewhat at the very end, overall I found it to be a mediocre show. Ultraman 80 is shaping up to be a much superior show.

Well, at least Crunchyroll offer Chromecast support. That's more than can be said for FUNimation or Cinemax. Jerks

Somebody should download each episode with a video capture recorder and put all eps in in order with the commercials cut out and that would save ultraman leo from being fan subbed .

I certainly was impressed by the opening two-parter of Leo. Those big water effects were amazing!
