I truly believe that the Violin Super Beast Giigon is among the greatest gifts Japan has ever bestowed upon the world.

I know he got kind of a cool reception around these parts but I always really dug Astromons from Taro's first episode.

Image

I mean, seriously, it's like a 1970s Biollante pre-make! I've got a really sweet Ultimate Monsters figure of him sitting on my desk - I would consider every figure from this line that I own among the best of my entire collection but the Astromons figure is something truly special. I'm not sure if it's the figure itself or the amazingness of the design! Though I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority around these parts, the insanity of these designs are why I tend to like the Ace/Taro monsters more than many of those from the rest of the series.

It's kind of a shame to think that the franchise has kind of since surpassed this brand silliness. Like, there's still comedy and bizarre monsters but I'd have a really hard time imagining a monster as patently crazy as Giigon or Mochiron being revived in a current work (even though I have SO MANY IDEAS for how Mochiron AND Minami could make a comeback XD).

This thread also wouldn't be complete without me expressing my undying love for what is possible one of the franchise's most psychotic of monsters (at least in his original appearance): the Moth Superbeast Doragory!

We all know this delectable scene by now, of course:

Image

He's been understandably neutered in his recent appearances but they haven't forgotten the crazy mutilation he pulled back in the day - Ultraman Mebius has a pretty hilarious nod to it when Doragory grabs Mebius' face and Teppei (GUYS' resident kaiju geek) flips the hell out in sheer terror of THE POSSIBILITIES. Unfortunately, the new suit loses that horrifyingly malicious grin of the original's. So much personality to this guy! Look at how much he's enjoying that!

Ah yes. Great idea for a thread.

Well, I think I prefer Ultraman monsters to Godzilla monsters at this point. Its really just been so long since I cared that much about Godzilla. Anyways, my favorites:

Gomess
Peguila
Litra
Neronga
Red King
Gabora (Powered)
Gomora
Eleking
Bemular
Pigmon

and..Gesura :D

I guess I like the more "Naturalistic" Ultra kaiju but I deff understand the appeal of the more "out there" kaiju...Tyrant rocks

And speaking of Vaxxim, here's that AWESOME method he has of entering our dimension, from 1972, meaning ZERO CG aid!

Yunitang! Ten beautiful women, who Hokuto enthusiastically approves of, much to Minami's chagrin! BUT THEY'RE SECRETLY TEN PARTS TO A SINGLE, HORRIBLE MONSTER.

I like all kinds of monsters, but the sheer number of ultra kaiju means that overall...there will be many more of them that resonate with fans.

For the record, I've always liked the weird reality altering monster Bruton from Ultraman episode #17
