Ultraman Episode #39: Farewell, Ultraman!

The Basics: Aliens invade earth to take out Ultraman and the Patrol.

The Plot: I used to hate the story in this one as the Patrol more or less beats the alien invasion on their own and as a whole it's rather blandly done. But....after repeated viewings, it's occured to me that having the Patrol be able to handle everything on their own was kind of the point. Earth is now in good hands. I STILL think the alien invasion is boring...not dramatic...and too easily beaten, but at least I can now appreciate why.

The Kaiju: Zetton is of course a now iconic kaiju, but I don't like him a whole lot. He has zero personality. He does have a nice design though. I'm assuming he's some kind of artificial life form made just to beat Ultraman.

The Acting: Reasonably good, except the choke out scene with Fuji....which is laughably bad.

The SPFX: Mixed bag overall. Zetton looks good and the miniatures of the Patrol headquarters and the environs are quite good, but at the same time I saw WAY too many wires from the alien invasion. Quite sloppy.

The Other Stuff: For a series ending episode, it's just kind of there for me for the reasons I mentioned above. I do like the Japanese subs for this one much better than the dub. Thought it odd that Hoshino, who they shoved down our throats for over 20 episodes, is nowhere to be seen. Also, the subs seem to imply that Hayata has no memory of the events following his plane crash in episode 1. Boy, does he have a LOT of catching up to do! Of course, this one totally sets up future Ultra series...and that's a good thing.

I would think Hayata would have to have memories, since it's not like Ultraman possessed his body and was "him" for the series. it was weird seeing Z-ton beat Ultraman the first time I watched it, and then having Zoffy chew him out for it.

still, a really good episode, and nice wrap up to the series.

Zetton is a favorite kaiju of mine, and i've always liked this story. While it was nice to see that the Patrol could handle a kaiju/seijin on their own, I always did find it odd that all of Ultraman's weapons were useless against Zetton and yet a single shot from a ray gun finnished him off. Still a decent episode and a nice end to the series.

I love how this episode immediately gets off to an epic start. I love the feeling of impending doom. The destruction of the HQ, the dogfight with the aliens. I especially love the summoning of the giant Zetton.

I think the episode is pretty great, but could do with being split into a two parter to allow it all to breathe. I also love this shot of Zetton looking over the fallen Ultraman. I do think it's soooo anticlimactic to see zetton get blown up so quickly and by something so "OH BTW, I MADE THIS". I love his sound effects though.

What became of the Zettons mother ship? Decorative wall clock v for the Ultraseven series.

 Look at that! Remember all you evil aliens out there! You had best prepare for a similar fate if you challenge Ultraman.
