Iron King, Super Robot Red Baron

So these box sets are ridiculously cheap now on amazon. In general, how are they? I'm into kaiju movies more than series, but I did watch the original Ultraman series and found it enjoyable, albeit a bit repetitive. For how cheap they are, I'm sure they are at least worth that much for pure fun.

I'm looking at other tokusatsu stuff I've never really gave a go as well that I can get for cheap. Starman is supposed to be the O.G. of tokusatsu, is that worth picking up?

I see Shaw Brothers put out Super Inframan - I have to pick that up. My two favorite genres are kaiju/tokusatsu stuff and old school martial arts. Anyone seen this?

I'm sure this has been brought up in the past, but I couldn't find any recent topics for it.

For the price they are both definitely worth it. I'm more of a fan of Red Baron.

Super Inframan is one of the greatest movies ever. There's a couple of threads about Inframan is probably the most relevant one.

Super Robot Red Baron is a GREAT show. I can take or leave Iron King, but since there are so few legit English-subbed toku series available for the US market I'm glad to have it in my collection.

Inframan may be the single greatest film ever made. If you love monsters or heroes you owe it to yourself to have a copy. The recent widescreen release is pure awesomeness; a great print with a sharp, crisp picture, gorgeous color and has the original language with subs as well as the awesome, classic English dub fully intact. So much better than the crappy pan & scan prints we've been subjected to in the past. This incredible flick gets a spin in my DVD player at least twice a year. It's so much goofy fun that even non-Japanese monster/hero fans can fully enjoy it. Find a copy & buy it NOW! You'll be glad you did!!

I hadn't even thought to mention the superb releases from the folks at JN Productions in Hawaii. Their KIKAIDA, KIKAIDA 01 and KAMEN RIDER V3 are all outstanding shows in their own right, and the DVD sets these people put out are incredible. The audio/video quality is as good as anything being done inside Japan and the extras are insane! Yes, they are pricey, but in these instances, you truly do get what you pay for. And INAZUMAN is pretty crazy fun, too. Just wish they'd get INAZUMAN FLASH out on DVD as well.

I bought both Iron King and Red Baron from Amazon a while ago because they were so cheap. I made it through about 10 episodes of Iron King. I made it to the episode where
their mole female traveling companion fell in love with the one hero and then sacrificed herself rather than betray the heroes.

It was ok, but all the eps were kind of samey, and the giant robot monsters seemed kind of lazy design-wise. However, I know if I had watched it as a kid I'd be instantly in love with it. I only made it through one episode of Red Baron and was reminded a bit of Iron King that I kind of shelved it after that because of Iron King fatigue. Given what I'm reading here, I should go back and finish Red Baron before Iron King?

Kamen Rider V3 is available but it's hella expensive, I believe.

Here's what you can get from JN Productions/Generation Kikaida — these are fully subtitled and are jammed-packed with special features and extras (more than any tokusatsu discs out there!):

I watched some more Red Baron episodes, and I definitely prefer it over Iron King. I enjoy the premise and setting more because everything's robo-mecha-centric, and the opening credits with that bass drum and scenes of industrial steel making is just too cool. The bicycle inspector is suprisngly fun. He's the comedy relief *but* also a competent fighter. I just about lost it when the Iron Alliance was trying to crash their car into him on his bike and he opens his umbrella and pumps it in the air, and true to anime physics, this makes him air-borne! The enemy robot designs seem better than those in Iron King, and I get the impression that this show had a better budget too.

I like them both, but Red Baron is definitely more up my alley.

I'm going to go back and watch this later this year or early next year...when I tried watching this for the first time, I had just finished Kikaider, 01, V3, Iron King, Max, Garo and Ultraseven all back to back and I think I was on a little bit of a toku burn out...
