I've been reading through past issues of G-Fan and J.D keeps mentioning the sentai-esque series Mikazuki...granted these issues are year old as is the series it seems. It does seems interesting though...I mean...a watermelon monster?! The titular hero/robot thing has a pretty cool design as well. Has anyone else seen this series? Is is worth tracking down?

Mikazuki. Is. AMAZING.

Easily the third-best modern tokusatsu series, IMO. You can see pictures of it .

Cool...so what are your other favorite two?

Number one is Tsuburaya's Bio-Planet WoO from 2006. In my opinion it's the best thing they've made since the original Ultra Q waaaaaaaay back in '66 and definitely the most satisfying of their series from the 90s onward. Very beautifully shot and with an expertly-crafted story.

And the second is another TPC show: Ultraman Max (2005). Most people swear by Ultraman Nexus but Max just does it for me a lot better. A lot of very talented people worked on this one and it really shows (not to knock the very talented people who worked on TPC's other great shows). Some of the episodes are quite simply some of the best the Ultra series has to offer and I'm constantly coming back to this show when I want to introduce people to Ultraman for the first time.

Then there's Mikazuki (2000). Design-wise it's absolutely fantastic - Keita Amemiya is a Golden God in that respect. The reason it only makes third best, however, is I just don't find it as fulfilling as the other two and the pacing feels just a little off at times. It's still amazing, though, and the Gekkoki pilot is one of my favorite characters ever.

I LOVE Mikazuki! I wish I could see the show with legit subtitles (mine are BAD!) but even if you only find a raw Japanese version, it's worth checking out. The characters are wonderful, and the hero robot (Mikazuki) is awesome. Very strange kaiju and an army of giant, retro, wind up style robots round out this show's awesomness! I always hoped they would make a follow up series, but from what I read, this one was VERY expensive to make (and it shows with superb production values!).

I agree with all y'alls regarding Mikazuki, though I consider it the best example of Tokusatsu to come out of Japan in years. That's not to cast any negative aspersions on any other shows made in the last few years or so, (those I've seen anyway) it's just that I reckon Mikazuki is just awesomeness beyond measure. I love that show.
Oh, and Wonder Seven is bleedin' hilarious.

I've never seen Woo, but I've been watching Ultraman Max lately and I'm digging that too. The Monster Island eps with Redking were fantastic.

Can anyone PM me with links of either web sites that stream these series or links for some place that carries the DVD's...I'm having a horrible time tracking any of these down.

It's hard to believe it's been ten years since I first watched Mikazuki. I still have that old HK set lying around somwhere, though it's been superseded by a legit version I picked up a year or so ago.
And that re-release is great, though it's bereft of any extras, including that Wonder Seven episode. It does have a nice artbook with some spiffy sketches of the monsters, though. That makes up for the lack of extras.
And it is nice to finally have a legit version of the show, even one without subtitles, incomprehensible or not. :)
