I gotta say, my absolute favorite moment in the episode was Yuki explaining the henshin sequence to Gentaro and being SO ENTHUSIASTIC about it. ADORABLE.

I saw a schoolyard bullying incident interrupted by a monster with a crazy design based on a constellation who was quickly attacked by a student dressed as a Japanese greaser and then their duel was quickly interrupted by a giant robot. Seemed pretty Japanese to me!

Honestly, I LIKE the mish-mash of Japanese and American high school tropes. I think it's gonna be a lot of fun, especially in the hands of Gurren Lagann's scribe!

BELIEVE IN ME, WHO BELIEVES IN KAZUKI NAKASHIMA.

Honestly though, I don't see what's so bad about the lunch room scene or the way it's written. I mean, yeah, it's fairly standard as far as American school dramas are concerned, setting up the cliques and their conflicts and stuff, but bad? Not really. I'm looking forward to seeing how Gentaro is able to befriend and unite all these disparate individuals, personally.

Watch this as well... It was, well, refreshing and pretty up-beat.

Gentaro is the biggest Japanese High School cliches (his hairdo and old school outfit totally scream Hanamichi Sakuragi from Slam Dunk and Kazuma Kuwabara From Yuyuhakusho), a transfer student who is thrown into a foreign background (here, a superficial and mainly parody of American High School cliches), and he is already challenging the status quo as he enters the cafeteria.

I don't really see the hate about the American High School cliches since overall one of main plot is about how Gentaro the japanese cliches trying to make friend with everyone, which of course he will succeed (since he's the star of the show) and thus resulting in changes to the superficial parody of the American High School settings.

Thus, Japanese High School cliches taking over and conquering American High School cliches... - this is 100% japanese writing in a japanese show...

And I think "swoon" would be the wrong word. More like "aaaaaaawwwwwwwww" [break off into high-pitch squeal]
